Okay, I know I could have put this in the other thread but I didn't want it to get lost in the shuffle. Does this change your view on the 14th amendment if you are against any change to it? link
This is merely a symptom to the greater issue. Attacking the 14th admendment to correct this is stupid You don't attack symptoms when you can simply resolve the disease Rocket River
Those number have to be questioned the source alone brings this to that conclusion. This is coming from the An analysis by the Pew Hispanic Center, based on U.S. Census Bureau data, show that illegal immigrants comprise slightly more than 4 percent of the adult population of the U.S., but because they are relatively young and have high birthrates, their children make up a much larger share of both the newborn population (8 percent) and the child population (7 percent of those under age 18) in this country.
Many of the developed countries face a population reduction pressure and the associated burden of funding services to retirees. Lower birth rate = less young workers = more burden on thing like social security, medicare, etc. per worker. So, isn't it actually beneficial that immigrants and illegal alien babies are here?
Out of curiosity, what is the problem with the source? In general, Pew is regarded pretty highly for their non-partisan research. I discussed birthrates with someone in the other immigration thread, and my conclusion was that the numbers people claimed were totally unrealistic. However, this study comes at it from a different angle but seems to come up with those same numbers. If these numbers really are accurate, I do think there are legitimate concerns there. I don't agree with changing the birthright thing on a whim, but I can see why people would be concerned if that large a portion of newborns are being affected by it.
Thank you. It's factual numbers that need to be brought out into the open in place of rhetoric and emotions. I'm shocked by 8% and the implication this number could increase significantly in coming years as those under 18 age and start having children.
And what of it? We are going to be overrun by Mexican newborns. I admit to be emotionally invested in this issue as an "anchor baby" but leaving aside my emotion aside if the rest of our population is declining we need more Americans to make sure that Social Security can be solvent and that there are more of a younger generation who will work and help to support the generations that are retiring.
But they're evil, illegal, non-English speaking monsters who'll take over the country. So no, they're not beneficial. I don't know the details, but I believe a lot of European countries with the same problem basically relax their immigration policies to make up for the aging population. Which is ironic, because those countries are a lot more homogeneous in ethnic makeup, and they're generally more close minded about foreigners than us.
I know 3 families who specifically went to the US or Canada just for the citizenship for their child, and they are all Chinese. Just saying that it's not only Mexicans who do it...
the sad nature of illegal immigrants is that they are very poor. they will not be the savior of our failed social security.
Wow, there are so many things wrong with this statement and the underlying assumptions, on so many levels, it's practically the "Inception" of clumsy one-liners.
The anchor baby issue is definitely in play. I don't like where that could lead, but tax payers are royally pissed off about illegals having large families that they are unable to properly care for without government assistance. It's complicated.
Going by that logic, illegal immigration is just a symptom of the greater issue - extreme poverty in 3rd world countries. So you can't "fix" illegal immigration in the US until you fix every impoverished country from which illegals are coming in.
