During the break that just passed they had a quote from Derek Anderson and then they said, "now all the Rockets are waiting for is to finalize Yao's contract extension. No new word on that yet but it is expected to be soon."

Not an exact quote but it's pretty close I think.

I thought it was just speculation at first but then he put in that "expected to be soon" part.

That's impossible. In 2007 the Lakers are gonna sign Amare and Yao and have the greatest big three ever.

LeBron is the only player I can see possibly turning down a max offer from his own team, and even he is likely to re-sign with the Cavs.

Isn't Yao in China? Are they going to fly to China to get his contract done? I don't think anyone is in a hurry. It's all just paperwork.

Yeah right. And somehow they can find enough money to sign Lebron to make them a Fab four there. :D

Yes he is in China and they already have people there and if it's all paperwork then they can fax him.

What if Yao says "we are gonna have cap space next summer. Let's load up first before giveing me the extention. That way, we have a better shot at the trophy."

I guess if this is true Golden State can go ahead and use that cap room they cleared up ........ :D

I hope this works and we can get Yao signed up for a long time to come .

with players like shaq, walker and finley taking less money to be with a contender, along with rockets DA and stromile, do you think Yao will take a cut. Maybe take dampier money and win. He's probably top 5 highest paid already from endorsements alone. I'd almost be dissapointed if he selfishly signed for the max.

i think we'll offer him the max, and he'll just sign on the dotted line
    "Whatever Cd, ill take it"

i think he'll sign anything we give him to an extent

Shaq has been the highest paid player in the league for some time now. You think he would have signed anything but the maximum extension with the Lakers half a decade ago? Yao is going to want the max and he deserves it. Michael Redd got it, and Yao > Redd.

If Les Alexander offers Yao anything less than the max, I'd expect Yao to turn it down immediately and wait to become an unrestricted free agent. Nike low-balled Yao after their original contract expired. Yao took it as a sign of disrespect and signed with Reebok, even though Nike's next offer was significantly higher than Reebok's.

This attitude from fans that Rox players/potential Rox players should/will go out of their way to make things easier for the Rox by signing for less then full potential of what they can get is puzzling. What do the players owe to the Rox to even consider getting less of what they can get? Business is business, fans shouldn't take that personally if the player is maximizing his present worth.

With TMac and Yao here in their prime though, it will be a pleasant common occurence that alot of players will sign for less just to be on this team, ala DA and Swift. But let's not assume.

It's a business and Yao deserves the max. You think the Rox would pay Yao if he got injured.

Shaq got max on his rookie extension. Walker and Finley all been overpaid for years.

Plus, with T-Mac on the team, we are going to be over the cap for years to come anyway. So there is no logical reason why Yao should take anything less than the max.

Given his current play, I don't think Yao deserves a max contract. He's going to get it anyway though

If anything, he'll at least deserve it more than half the people out there with max contracts: a la Allan Houston, Michael Redd, Joe Johnson.

You're contradicting yourself. If Yao is better than 50% of players with Max contract like you said, then he deserves it. If Rockets don't offer Max contract to Yao, then I am sure every other team in the NBA will jump on the opportunity to sign him up.
