Here's something. I RARELY call in to radio shows. Just not usually my thing. But, I've been amped up over the Rockets, so I called Palillo's show on Tuesday to talk Rockets. No biggie. Really short. End of story. Today, I'm in my car and they even mentioned that lines were open so I though, eh, I had a question I was curious CP's opinion, so I called from my truck. The guy who takes the call asks my name and what I want to discuss. He then asks, "Have you called today or this week?" I said, "Yeah, I called earlier in the week, why?" He responds, "Don't call more than once per week," and proceeds to put me on hold. So, I hung up. It wasn't like I was going to say the same thing I said on Tuesday, but whatever. I listen to that show most every day and Palillo, I know, doesn't always have a full board of calls. Most times, in fact, he is sitting waiting on them, particularly early in the show. Plus, on shows like Lance and John or even Adam and Matt, they get guys that repeat - people they know by name. And, like I said, since Charlie has been at 790, I've called (including today) maybe 4 times TOTAL. Kind of annoying and, frankly, I'm not calling back.
Some people can call in everyday and still have interesting and valid comments. What an odd rule to make. I wouldn't call back either.
I seriously doubt Charlie knew. I'm going to ask though. My closest friend sees him all the time. They worked together at KTRH and are still friends, so I'm going to ask for sure.
My experiences with radio call in shows, no matter which one, have usually been negative. That does seem like a strange policy though for a new station trying to establish a fan following.
I have NEVER called 740, but I used to always want to do what some guy always did: at the end of his call, he'd say "GO ROCKETS!!!" really loud. I thought that was cool. When Russ Small, Charlie Palillo and Rich Lord were there, I think 740 was tops, and 610 didn't come close. I hate Charlie Palillo, though. Ever since he said on 740 that he would NEVER go to 610, then DID, I've hated that freakin' TWO-FACE son of a motherless goat. Everywhere he goes, he makes STUPID comments he can't admit he made later. Last year, I remember clearly that the Astros were in the rut just after the All-Star break, then he said: "Put a fork in them, they're DONE." Once they made the playoffs on the last two games of the season, when everybody had counted them out, and a caller told him straight out: "You're a hypocrite. [CP answered 'why?'] Can I quote you? [CP agreed to let him] You said..." and he quoted CP. He didn't admit it... ever... he thought the caller was just being an ASS. I bet you ANYTHING, this happened with my ROCKETS too... he said they wouldn't make it when we traded away almost the whole team for Tracy McGrady ... I bet you anything... I hate the JAZZ, but Charlie Pallilo comes in a close second.
I remember back in the 80's Tom Franklin did Rockets Wrap. There was a guy who called in almost every single night wanting to talk about Lewis Lloyd. Finally, they shut him down. Of course Tom Franklin was a big jerk but it was funny as hell.
Pallilo has an attitude, but saying the Astros were dead last year wasn't far from the truth. And complimenting the Stros for making the playoffs and proving him wrong didn't make him a hypocrite. They needed a miracle run to make it to the playoffs, which is exactly what they got. You know, Lazarus was dead too.
First time caller, long time listener, thank you for taking my call, you're really a breath of fresh air, you really tell it like it is, the caller before me stole my thunder, I'll hang up and listen. Seriously, Jeff, that's kind of odd. Especially for a new station trying to gain listeners.
In July and August i remember Palillo being the only one out of him, Rich and David to actually not throw the towel completely in. Both Rich and David would whine that it was over and the astros needed to trade Beltran and Kent before the deadline. Charlie often argued that you couldn't trade those guys when your only 5 games out of the playoffs with 2 months to go. Then before the cubs series he said the astros must take 3/4 to have a legitimate shot at the playoffs. They did and that was that. If your going to b**** about anyone, take it up with Rich and David.
maybe you have what they believe to be an "annoying voice" to radio listeners. Ive called in on point with MattJ before and the brush me off the air because i know my voice isnt that appealing. But I make some good points. Its the only theory I have. Either that or some host just like to put you on "mute" so they can hear themselves talk about your topic. Gummi - Do you know what Cat shot tonight in the first qtr? MattJ - 0 for 9 Gummi - Then why would JVG keep him in there? MattJ - Then who are you going to put in there??? (favorite line) Gummi - Anyone that isnt 0 for 9!!! p.s. Just more reason to love 610. Not only do you have the warmer "non-talking hairdo" personalities 790 does, but you also have the personalities of the usual callers. I love hearing the pessimistic Butt Doctor, and hear Cowboy Steve make an ass out of himself, etc.
I wouldn't be surprised if he did know. I bet he got tired of taking calls from the same people that seem to call 610 daily. If he didn't know, I bet it's a Ken Charles rule. He's an ass in his own right. There's an easy way to get around it. Use a new name each time and deny having called before.
One early saturday morning I called in a station here in S.A. for a contest. I was suprised I got it. The contest is simple, answer a bunch of questions and the winner gets a prize. I guessed at most of the questions and actually won! The prize.....................Barry Manilow tickets!!! Needless to say I didnt pick them up nor will I call back either!
So when is Charlie going to file for restraining order to keep Jeff from stalking him? Jeff, you must get over your obsession with CP.
Someone else had a once-a-week limit about 10 or 15 years ago when I used to listen to a lot of talk radio. I can't remember who it was. I don't even recall if it was a local or national broadcast. I thought it was local and I thought it was KTRH. As a matter of fact, I could've sworn it was "Cowboy" (if you guys remember him) who mentioned it. He was a caller from Dallas who used to call up KTRH's Sportsbeat program. In any case, I know this isn't a first. I thought it was odd when I heard about it back then, too.
Remember the saying, "The dumbest question is the one that was never asked"? Apparently, they've never heard of Cowboy Steve.
