76ers targeting Rockets' VP of Basketball Ops, Sam Hinkie, for GM

this is starting to get painful...

The Philadelphia 76ers are targeting Houston Rockets executive vice president of basketball operations Sam Hinkie in their ongoing search for a new general manager, SI.com has learned.

A leader in the league's analytics movement who has been the Rockets' second-in-command behind general manager Daryl Morey for the past five years, Hinkie joins a field of candidates that includes Boston assistant general manager Mike Zarren, former New Orleans general manager Jeff Bower, and former Portland assistant general manager and ESPN analyst Tom Penn. Sixers incumbent Rod Thorn has a year remaining on his contract, but his deal reportedly includes a provision through which he will become a part-time consultant with the team for the following five years as part of a transition that already has begun.

The Sixers have received permission to speak with Hinkie, though it's not known if he has met with owner Josh Harris and his group. It also remains unclear whether Hinkie is willing to leave his job with the Rockets to continue his NBA front office ascent.

Hinkie -- who has been integral in draft, scouting and salary cap management for the Rockets and has an MBA from Stanford -- was hired by Houston as a special assistant to then-general manager Carroll Dawson in 2005. While there is no known timeline for the Sixers' search, the job became far more appealing when the Sixers landed center Andrew Bynum on Aug. 10 in the four-team deal that sent Dwight Howard to the Lakers.

There is already momentum for the Sixers entering their second season under the Harris-led ownership group, as eighth-seeded Philadelphia downed the top-seeded -- and Derrick-Rose less -- Bulls in the first round of the playoffs. Philadelphia also took Boston to seven games before falling in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The Sixers lost two of their top three leading scorers in Lou Williams (via free agency to Atlanta) and Andre Iguodala (in the four-team trade, to Denver), but added shooting guard Nick Young and center Kwame Brown via free agency. They also made a trade with Golden State to acquire small forward Dorell Wright.

Potentially worrisome, as the Rockets, unlike the Spurs, have yet to prove they can successfully withstand the poaching of integral front office staff. Funny to think that in order to actually tank hardcore, we'd probably need to rid ourselves of them. I'd reckon they'd be about as hard to replace as acquiring superstar when we inevitably need them back though.

This actually isn't a bad thing IMO.

Yesterday, Mark Cuban was on ESPN Dallas radio, and spoke about how if you look at some of the major deals that have gone down in the past, there is almost alway a relationship that exists between front office members that helped the deal get done from that GM being part of a mafioso stemming from another organization. For example, the Spurs mafioso with Presti in OKC, and now Hennigan in ORL.

Sam Hinkie is a smart guy and will be a more than capable GM for another team. If he's going to get the job with another team, I dont see too many o ther teams out there better for him to join than Philly. They are out of the Rockets conference, and will be out of their draft tier for the next couple of seasons.

Yeah, we are all jealous of Philly right now, but truth of the matter is whats done is done, and at the very least Philly can turn out to be part of the Rockets "mafiosa" now, and could make for a very interesting partnership in the future.

excellent point dobro. my ass soreness is starting to wear off.

Yeah, who would want a young dominant 7 foot center who happens to already be the 2nd best player in the league at that position? I'll spare you the rollyeyes

Who closed the Iguadala-Bynum deal? That should be your GM right there.

Evan Turner and Andrew Bynum have more trade value separately than most of our assets combined. I'm slightly jelly.

Me and 27 other NBA teams that do not have one of the top 2 centers in the NBA.

That being said, Im really not that upset about it. It sucks that Houston missed out, but I dont blame Morey for not going all in on Bynum. At the end of the day Orlando had reasons for doing the deal they did, and Houston had reasons for not giving up everything they owned for Bynum.

Why do we need a backup SG when we have Delfino and Lamb?

Our front office has higher value around the league than our players.

ah, i see Morey's plan. He's installing a mole in the 6ers organization. Come time for Bynum to resign, Hinkie will inexplicably choose to sign and trade Bynum to Houston for a low second round pick. It's the old trojan horse strategy.

Of course it's not. I've yet to see you declare anything at all a bad thing for the Rockets. You seem to have the ability to spin anything that happens in the NBA landscape as a positive for the Rocket organization. I'm sure once Morey gets poached, which is inevitable, you'll find some upside in it.
