Matt Murphy, a 21-year-old student and construction supervisor from New York, emerged from a scuffle holding the ball. He said he decided to sell it because he couldn't afford to pay the taxes required to keep it.

    What the....taxes?

The ball is worth a lot of money, so the government will make you pay taxes just like you won the lotto. Duh

Taxes on the value of the ball. Even if he didn't sell it he would have had to pay taxes on what the estimated value of the ball. So if they valued it high of course he pays taxes based on that with his own money even if he hadn't sold it. That's why he sold it so he would have the money to cover the cost of the taxes.

America's tax code. Gotta love it.

Catch a baseball and you either have to get rid of it or end up bankrupt.

Stupid. Leave the ball alone. If people want to picture it with an * on it in their own minds, that's their God-given right. Why ruin the ball? You could stamp an asterisk on half the memorabilia in the Hall if you wanted.

Yeah I spit out my drink when I read the Hall would take it even though they aren't taking a position. To me, displaying the ball with asterisk is taking a position.

What's stupid is some guy paying 3/4 of a Million $'s so he can brand it and send it to the hall. The record is set, get over it. Just wait for A-Rod to break it then brand that ball too after you find out what kind of illegal substance he has been taking.

the guy is rich. he could careless about the money. i'm sure he feels strongly about the record. i don't see anything wrong with it. it's his money. besides, i'm sure the publicity he got in the whole thing, will make him more money with his company.

They'll be plenty more Bonds HR balls to shoot into space. The only team desperate and stupid enough to take him is most likley the Astros, and with Houston you have the NASA tie-in. At least Houstonians will get rich off catching them...

you can bet that the * side of the ball will be the side turned to the crowd

I hate people that want to act like they above this thing then
turn around and do something like this. . which is basically them accepting it

I disagree. They are a museum, they don't have to agree with everything in history to display it.
