Anyone seen the NBA.com recap of the game? http://www.nba.com/games0001/20010111/hounyk/recap.html Johnson tried to draw a foul on the final shot, but Maurice Taylor avoided committing one despite leaving his feet on a pump-fake. "It was probably a no-call," Johnson said. Now, I wouldn't expect the writer to be tearing up the refs for all the bad calls against the Rockets(not "objective"), but after all that, the guy has the nerve to insinuate the game was unfair for the Knicks???? ------------------
I saw that . . . I figure the writer probably was in bed with the refs . . . Nah, it seems to me that he maintained that the final play was questionable in its foul-call-ability. But to question the last play and not look at the otherwise one-sided officiating is preposterous. ------------------ "Any answer that can't be questioned is no answer at all. It's gibberish. For a guy not known for his defensive prowess, Mo sure did a superb job on LJ's last attempt. Clearly, LJ tried to cause the contact, which is why there was no call. ------------------ Maybe all the rulers are wrong. Current Rocket's Salary & Contract Info
..another case of East coast bias ------------------ "me and four guys from St.Pete...Fo..Fo..Fo"- Moses in the 80-81 finals
How is the writer of the story insinuating that the game was unfair? Fact 1: Johnson tried to draw the foul with the pump fake. (that really happened) Fact 2: The writer wrote "...but Maurice Taylor avoided committing one despite leaving his feet on a pump-fake." (that happened as well) Fact 3: The writer quoted Larry Johnson who said "It was probably a no-call". (NOTE - Johnson did not say it was a bad call, he said it was a no-call. A "no-call" is a positive thing in sports. It means that ther MAY have been a foul but the refs decided to not call it). The writer wrote nothing to insinuate the game was unfair. The same writer in the same story quoted Jeff Van Gundy saying, "We deserved to lose". ------------------
You know Bobrek, after rereading the story( I didn't read the whole thing) perhaps I was wrong ,because I was thinking it is what he DIDN'T talk about( the horrible officiating)that bugged me the most...but at the end he does make a ref to the Rocket offensive fouls....that could be interpreted a number of ways..I don't know...just used to hearing it all the time. ------------------ "me and four guys from St.Pete...Fo..Fo..Fo"- Moses in the 80-81 finals
Ya think so RM95?? ------------------ Go vote for Steve Francis for the All-Star game!! You only have until Sunday!! Vote for Francis!
maybe so, but i'm going to try to make a concerted effort to track the foul disparity over the next few games. this game, we were called for 9 more fouls than the opposition - by far the largest disparity in the nba last night. now, i realize that we are a team of hackroids, but c'mon. more importantly, is the timing of these calls, and who they're against. i swear the refs look for the quickest opportunity to get mo taylor out of the game as possible. mo, are you screwing one or two of their wives? are you selling plane tickets, too? ------------------
verse - If you are looking at the timing of the calls, the timing went the Rockets way in the last 5 minutes. In particular, an inadvertant trip by Camby on Francis that did not affect the play and the last second "non-call". I agree that it should never be called a foul when the shooter leans into the defender after a fake, but refs tend to call it in the shooter's favor. Also, 3 of the 4 illegal defense calls on the Knicks were made in the 4th quarter. The refs seemed to have an offensive foul jones against the Rockets last night, but all questionable calls after the 5th foul on Walt went against the Knicks. ------------------
The NYTimes article on the game is obnoxious, too. The "brilliant" Knick offense "held" the Rockets to 37% shooting. But the fact that NY shot %31 was somehow not due to the Rocket's defense, but to the Knicks' faltering offense. What a bunch of jerkies.
bobrek, my apologies, if that came across COACH SAMPSON-ish. i see what you're saying, and i'd agree about the poor officials. i do believe that certain officials do "have it in" for certain players. even certain owners GO CUBAN!!! GO CUBAN!!! GO CUBAN!!! GO CUBAN!!! GO CUBAN!!! ------------------
I stand corrected, bobrek. Thanks for the explanation. I thought no-call meant bad call. For what it's worth, I apologize to the beat writer for questioning his/her credibility and for the topic of this thread. Not that he/she cares, but oh well. The next thread I start will be more positive. We have way too much negativity in this bbs as it is. ------------------

hmmm, if you were suffering from water deprivation in the middle of the Sahara, you'd be quite happy with a teaspoon or two of dishwater. yes, the rockets kept playing their game; and, eventually, the refs eased up on them. however, that doesn't make it a good job by the refs - even in the last 5 minutes. the trip was, in fact, a foul. and had that been a rocket shooting that 3 that lj chucked up, you can GUARANTEE it would have been an offensive foul. in other words, i'm grateful for the chicken bone the refs dug up and kicked us in the last 5 minutes, but i'd much rather have meatloaf they're giving the rest of the league. it's not enough to call a game 1/2 right at the end of a game to "even things out". that's bull****. and i can't just take it and beg for another bone and teaspoon. ------------------ [This message has been edited by verse (edited January 12, 2001).]
I never said it was a good job by the refs. I was referencing the comment you made: more importantly, is the timing of these calls, and who they're against. Timing-wise, the Rockets did not get any bad breaks at the end of the game. I agree there were a number of bad offensive fouls called, but otherwise the calls were no worse than any other game. I am quite certain that if you watch any team during the course of the year, you will be sure that the refs have it in for a certain player (e.g. Wallace on the Blazers, Laettner on whatever team he's on, Rider). Heck, even the Laker fans think Shaq gets a raw deal. There are no conspiracies, there are just lousy officials. Incidentally, the Rockets have attempted 870 free throws, their opponents 853. They have committed 746 fouls, their opponents 764. ------------------
