Food Chains, Including McDonald's & Burger King Sued Over Grilled Chicken

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A US doctors' group has sued seven leading fast-food chains including McDonald's and Burger King over their use of a "dangerous carcinogenic" in grilled chicken.

The Washington-based Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) filed suit in California Thursday "to compel the restaurants to warn unsuspecting consumers".

The group said every sample of grilled chicken products from the seven national chains "tested positive for a dangerous carcinogenic compound called PhIP" during analysis at an independent laboratory.

PhIP is one of a group of carcinogenic compounds called heterocyclic amines (HCAs) that are found in grilled meat. In 2005, the US government officially added HCAs to its list of cancer-causing agents, the doctors' group said.

"Grilled chicken can cause cancer, and consumers deserve to know that this supposedly healthy product is actually just as bad for them as high-fat fried chicken," PCRM president Neal Barnard said in a statement.

"Even a grilled chicken salad increases the risk of breast cancer, prostate cancer and other forms of this lethal disease," he said.

Aside from McDonald's and Burger King, the chains named in the lawsuit were Chick-fil-A, Chili's, Applebee's, Outback Steakhouse and TGI Friday's.

WTF! Why are the doctor's suing? The people that eat there should be benefitting. All I ever order from Mickey D's is a chicken select sandwich. I also visit AppleBee's about once a month, usually ordering a chicken something.

So what does that mean? It's now bad to eat fried and grilled chicken? I guess the last thing is boiled.

I have always heard this though, that grilling meat is unhealthy because it creates carcinogens. I don't know how true that is though.

I think there's a lot of truth in that. it's the stuff in the black charred part of the meat that is unhealthy

That's exactly what I heard, it is those burnt/blackened parts that are unhealthy. I remember reading also though that eating them no more than once a week should be fine.

Maybe New York should ban grilled chicken.

Carcinogens from grilled meat has been known for a while. This lawsuit looks frivolous. People are still going to eat grilled foods.

You should be more worried about clogged arteries than cancer. The article says grilled chicken.

This is why I only eat fried foods. Much smaller chance of health risk.

Is the risk of PhIP more serious in chicken grilled over charcoal rather than gas, or does it matter?

How about a grill pan or a George Foreman grill? They aren't going to sue the former Heavyweight Champion of the World, now are they????

No, meat just has to get cooked long enough over a certain temp, ie burnt/blackened for the carcinogenic chemicals to form.

I'm guessing they're suing because grilled chicken is usually advertised as a healthy fast food because of the lower fat levels.

i once heard that charred meat from a grill or smoked meats tasted good. also, that the older one gets, the sooner they will probably die.

MEOWGI, i think we should ban together and sue time as well.

    anyone with me?
