They were probably on their way to an Iraqi military base to begin human shield preparation...

In light of the recent suicide bombing, what would have the soldiers at that checkpoint do?

    Tragic. :(

    That's exactly the problem. They're in a no-win situation.

It is truly tragic that things like this happen.

I heard we have signs telling them to stop or be killed. you hate to see this, but Sadaam and Bin Laden did this, not us.

What a tragedy. This is what happens when the Iraqis dress troops as civilians to attack checkpoints with homicide bombs.

If you are angry about this, you must stay mad all the time, since the Iraqi government systematically kills women and children to maintain their despotic order.

Anyway, this is still horrible. What can American and British troops do though, when cars refuse to stop at checkpoints while Iraqi troops are breaking every Geneva Convention rule?

If we did not invade Iraq, then according to Amnesty International, Saddam will kill in excess of 10,000 civilians over the next year.

Wow, I bet you are really mad now!!

When soldiers with guns tell someone to stop.....and also fire warning shots; then they damn well better stop........otherwise they go boom.....

Yes it will. It's what Saddam does after breakfast. Kills himself a few women and children.

Please. Don't invade Iraq and worse types of things continue to happen. This is a tragedy, but don't lose perspective. It isn't like the US and UK invaded Disney Land and are ruining the "happy, happy, joy, joy" of the gleeful Iraqi people. The Iraqi people have endured worse than this.

It is comforting to know that if the Rockets don't make the playoffs, we can still blame it on Saddam. :p Seriously, you can't blame everything that happens in this war on Saddam anymore than you can blame it all on Bush. In this particular instance, I'd blame the illiterate, deaf, insane and/or suicidal driver who ignored signs and warning shots and kept driving forward.

Unfortunately, our soldiers dont have the luxury of time when trying to decide if a vehicle that blows through a check point is a threat to their lives or not. The last time two times they hesistated, 4 soldiers died and 15 others were injured.

Im thinking a stop sign or the word "stop" is pretty much a universal understanding.

No, they did this on purpose. Just ask Saddam and his foreign minister. They will tell you all about it and the "la la" land they live in.

Seriously, though, this is a terrible, disgusting tragedy that happened. However, I agree with codell...you can't do your own thing in a war and ignore a checkpoint or soldiers. We don't know what the hell said vehicle is doing nor do we have time to assess the occupants of such a vehicle and their intentions. All we have is van does not stop, seemingly ignores signs, and keeps coming at us. We fire a warning shots. No response. Then, shoot the engine of the car. Not stopping. Oh crap...here they come...ur or them....let em have it. What else can we do?

These people(or just the driver) either wanted to martyr themselves or do not know how to read or follow instructions. If the person didn't know how to read a sign, then he has no business driving the van. I think this guy had a martyrdom death wish and took everyone else along for the hell ride.

If that van would have exploded our troops again, then that would be worse.

You should research your posts more before quoting stats from Amnesty International. In particular United States violations over the past 20 years. Your opinions are typical of the thoughtless support for a war with the true objective of making huge sums of money for American firms. This money filters back to American workers that then spend their salaries, stimulating the economy ending recessions.
