    link?

if he's retiring then the rockets can take his $3.8M off the cap.

this move probably comes because the rockets couldn't find a trade for him. it's better to clear money off the cap and get some room under the LT line.

Where is the nutcase that ripped so many of us up and down last summer when we said Sura wouldn't ever play again? I can't remember who it was.

Still counts against the cap unless they get medical clearance

    http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap99.htm#51

    51. How do retired players count against the cap?

Any money paid to a player is included in team salary, even if the player has retired. For example, James Worthy retired in 1994, two years before his contract ended. He continued to receive his salary for the 94-95 and 95-96 seasons, so his salary was included in the Lakers' team salary in those seasons. It is at the team's discretion (or as the result of an agreement between the team and player) whether to continue to pay the player after he has retired.

There is one exception whereby a player can continue to receive his salary, but the salary is not included in the team's team salary. This is when a player is forced to retire for medical reasons and a league-appointed physician confirms that he is medically unfit to continue playing. There is a waiting period of two years (if the injury or illness occurred between January 1 and July 1) or until the second July 1 following the injury or illness (if it occurred between July 1 and January 1) before a team can apply for this salary cap relief. If the waiting period expires mid-season (on any date prior to the last day of the regular season), then his entire salary for that season is removed from the team's team salary. For example, Luc Longley suffered a career-ending injury in March 2001. In March 2003, the Knicks were allowed to remove his entire 02-03 salary from their books (and since the luxury tax is based on the team salary as of the last day of the regular season, the Knicks avoid paying any tax on Longley's salary). There is also some luxury tax relief associated with disabled players -- see question number 15 .

If a player retires, even for medical reasons, his team does not receive a salary cap exception to acquire a replacement player.

Complete Rockets coverage The Rockets could be ready to land their long-sought power forward help, but also to begin another recruiting effort with a European star.

The Rockets were close to an agreement on Thursday to land Tau Ceramica star Luis Scola, one of the pillars of Argentina’s Olympic champion team and reserve Jackie Butler from the Spurs for guard Vassilis Spanoulis, a second round pick and cash considerations, a NBA executive with knowledge of the deal said.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey could not be reached for comment.

Team have sought Scola for years, but found it increasingly difficult to lure him from Europe as he became a more established star with one of the traditional European powers. He had starred for Argentina along with Manu Ginobili, Fabricio Oberto and Walter Hermann.

Spanoulis played 31 games for the Rockets last season, but said he would not return to the United States to play for any team.

Is there a chance he is a medical retirement? He hasn't played in like what 2 years due to injuries?

Anyway the Rockets will buy him out at $1M so the 3.8M won't count.

I thought he hasn't played in 2 years because of his back.. might be going out on a limb, but I would think his retiring has something to do with the same issue

Well he is still a expiring contract. he could still be a attractive trade bait for a team trying get under the tax threshold?.

BTW, even this morning i cant get over the fact that we got scola and butler for only span. just wow.

it was both, if i remember correctly, after the knee surgery, his back screwed up, and after that healed his knee flared again.

They might get the medical clearance, but it is not automatic, particularly for older players. They have a very strict standard, probably to avoid any chance at salary-cap shenanigans.

I know that when larry Johnson retired due to a back back, the KNICKS asked for medical clearance and were DENIED.

They ask things like "If this guy were 24, could he come back from this injury?" Had he had any HINTS of this injury before he signed the contract? How much has he actually played since he suffered this injury? Could he function at all as a 15th man, even injured?

I think we have a pretty good shot with Sura considering he's spent the last 2 seasons trying to come back and didn't play a single game. Regardless, he only has 1 mill guaranteed, so it's not a big deal.
