According to KILT 610 AM, the Rockets and Olajuwon have moved closer to a deal in the past 24 hours but that no deal is imminent.

    Kinda a switch, huh?

    Rockets Counter Toronto's Offer

    Hakeem Will Return to Houston

    By TRG

The Toronto Raptors traded Charles Oakley to the Chicago Bulls to clear some cap space and immediately tendered an offer to Hakeem Olajuwon. The Raptors offered Hakeem a three-year contract worth roughly $17 million, but the offer would not go unanswered by the Rockets.

The Rockets have had little interest in the big name free agents this summer, which opened up some serious cap money to be used in re-signing their own free agents, starting with Hakeem Olajuwon. The Rockets had a 2-year deal worth 7 million on the table for Hakeem, which was less than Hakeem felt he could play for. He made a statement that he would probably not return to Houston, which was made solely for the purpose of hiking his price up. It worked.

The Rockets are now offering Hakeem the amount of money he wanted, for the term that he wanted, and Hakeem will now re-sign with the team that has shown him unsurpassed loyalty for 17 years. Hakeem will sign with the Rockets for 2 years at $10 million per year, and the team gets an option for a third year. This will easily be the last contract of Hakeem's career and will see him finish where he started: right here in Clutch City.

I'm certain that the Toronto deal is legit. I'm sure they put an offer on the table but it probably just influenced negotiations in Houston.

So, now the Rockets can offer Mo 6 million, while offering Moochie and Shandon exceptions, right?

    IMO

I still smell the work of an agent!

Fegan is playing one end against the other!

I just hope it doesn't explode into someone's face!

That's what I'm thinking Jeff, I just hope that it doesn't force the Rockets to overpay him and hurt them in the process.

    2 yrs, $20 million!?! For ~30 games of 10/7? Insane. Stupid. r****ded. (Insert adjective here}

I can appreciate everything Hakeem's done for the city but c'mon? How can we accomodate MoTay, ShandaMan, or Mooch, if we're tossin' Dream this kinda dough.

I won't say this is sickening because I understand business is business but my respect for Hakeem dips to new lows everyday.

If the Rockets sign Dream to a $10M deal, they don't have enough to pay Taylor unless he'll take a 1 year deal for about $4.5M or a multi-year deal starting at $3M per season. Norris and Anderson have early bird rights, so they are not a cap issue.

Why is Moochie an early bird?

Jeff, I'm not following the Mo pay you mention. The 1yr part is odd. And the $3m is too low.

    Ii is simpler than that:

    1. The Middle Class Exception is for $4.5m and up to 6 yrs. Mo can sign for that at anytime, which always us to pay Dream $17m for one year, if we are so inclined. If Mo takes the MCE, we don't need *any* salary cap at all, everyone just signs via Bird rights.

    2. If we intend to pay Dream >$9m and Mo' greater than the MCE, we are going to have to renounce Shandon. Thus, lose his Bird rights, and force us to sign him with the MCE.

Are you sure that this is actually happening? All the other websites are reporting "Hakeem-to-Toronto" stories.
