http://www.sportsbybrooks.com/six-foot-girl-banned-from-boys-hoops-league-17898 There’s a twelve-year old girl in Oregon that’s already received a full scholarship offer to play basketball at Oregon State. Jaime Nared girls basketball For a year, Jaime Nared played basketball with the boys in her age group. And then she was kicked off the team. From ABCNEWS.COM : Her coach said the other players’ parents were fine when Jaime joining the team until she outshone their sons on the court. “They were great … until she blocked the first shot. Then they were like, ‘Hey, we don’t want this big kid coming out and making us look bad,’” said Michael Abraham, Jaime’s coach. After parents complained, The Hoop, a private league that organizes the games, told Jaime she could no longer play with the boys, citing a rule that bars mixed-gender teams. The ruling upset enough people that Nared’s teammates actually wrote letters to the league asking her to be reinstated. The Hoop has held firm in their decision.
They should let her play cause 12 year old basketball is pretty irrelevant. About her goal to play in the NBA...hah.
wow you are right, she does look like them when they were young. I thought I would get a bunch of "there's no way she's better than the boys" posts. We had girls that were 6' + on our middle school teams but they were not that coordinated. I'd like to see her play to see why these parents were so intimidated by the way she outshone their boys. Talk about insecure. Sounds like the boys on the team were less insecure about being outplayed by a girl than the parents.
Are you serious... lol you are hanging out with some underdeveloped 16 year olds then. She's tall and gangly... at the most she could be 14. I just watched the video. They need to get her on teams with taller girls. She looks like she's a pretty good ball handler and a hustler.
I once helped out coaching a jr. high school basketball team when I was a teacher... we had a 6'2'' 13-year-old on the team. Unfortunately she was not very coordinated, and thus, not very effective. This girl looks pretty good.
That's how the tall girls were when I played. I was anywhere from 3-6 inches shorter than they were and could push them around on both ends of the court. One ended up getting more coordinated and played for the UK womens, but we aren't exactly a powerhouse school. Though our women's team is getting better each year.
imho, i think they made the 'right decision'. some of these boys may have ego problems after playing with her too long.
If she can hang with the boys let her play. I think we will see a woman in MLB in the next 50 years (knuckleball pitcher perhaps)...Basketball might be considerably longer...unless maybe one becomes lethal from the (NBA mens) 3pt line and can find work as a 12th "man" off the bench.
Regular 12 year old kids don't want to play a 6 foot tall girl...If they were about 5 years older then it might be a case. 12 year olds trying to make a statement on the basketball court just doesn't cut it for me. When she's 16 or 17 then let her try out for a HS basketball team or something.
here is the yahoo video of the story. <object classid='clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000'codebase='http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0'width='320'height='270'id='yfop'><param name='allowScriptAccess' value='always' /><param name='movie' value='http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/fop/embedflv/swf/fop.swf' /><param name='flashvars' value='id=7971139' /><embed src='http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/fop/embedflv/swf/fop.swf' width='320' height='270' name='yfop' allowScriptAccess='always' type='application/x-shockwave-flash' pluginspage='http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer' flashvars='id=7971139' /></object>
It would only be a matter of time before some boy put his hand somewhere that she would take offense at.....
Yeah good thing they don't allow hand checking anymore. Oh well, she could still get some poor little boy excited when she boxes someone out.
