we just acquired a $6.5 million trade exception with this trade, which allows us to trade any of our players for a player making up to $6.5 million over his salary. with the KG rumor floating around, does anyone think this might come into play?
there is no way minny will trade kg right now unless he made it clear that he will be gone after this season, but i doubt thats the case. who else could we possibly trade for?...artest maybe?
It does nothing for gaining KG. The exception is a little better than trading Rice's expiring contract tho because 1. it lasts a little longer I believe 2. it can be broken up into chunks, it doesn't have to be exact like Rice's contract. We could take 2 million extra in one deal, 3 mill in another, etc. The only downside is that it's not as big as GR's contract.
In the Jackson sticky, I mentioned maybe Cat/Griffin/Cato for O'Neal and then we at least have ballpark trade value for KG. Wasn't it interesting timing about the article of KG wanting to play with Yao & Steve...
the $6.5 million trade exception is valid for ONE YEAR. we can hold the TE unti next summer, when things are clearer on the FA front. there's nothing, to my knowledge stopping us from packaging: mobley cato a resigned eddie griffin $6.5 million TE for a player next summer.
Disclaimer Edit to above: I spoke from the heat of the moment, it may be complete nonsense from a cap standpoint.
It may just be a luxury tax move. Without the move, maybe they don't go after Jackson. But it does create something for the future and something they can work with.
As I recall, it was Rudy that let the exception expire because he felt Rice was the answer and we didn't need any more trades or roster moves. Kind of like Nachbar being this years pick. That is how I recall it.
The trade exception is the part that I absolutely love. JJ is Glen Rice times about 4 right now, and I love that. But to me, this means a big move in the near future. By that I mean within the year. Only thing I don't love about it is that Mobley is the best way to utilize this TE. I really like Cat, but he's the best tradeable player on the team by far, and he's such a bargain that he would be a big enticement for the Rockets to use in luring other teams out of their players. If the TE is used, I really think Cat's gonna be gone with it, its the only practical advantage the exception gives you.
Why the only practical advantage? Why not the TE and someone you don't want for someone they don't want who fits in better here and they save the $?
DT - Disagree. The league is full of SG's. Line 'em up and rank 'em. Cat's somewhere in the middle. Maybe the upper 3rd. I'm serious...put on your best "homer tradin' cap" and see what you get when you think about it.
I recall the same damn thing. Something about the owner giving permission for CD to spend up to but not over the luxery tax.
Wouldn't Glen Rice's contract been more valuable NEXT year? Why try to get better NOW when we're not going to get far into the playoffs, but instead get better LATER by much more when we DO have the chance to go far in the playoffs? I admit, I dont know much about NBA economics, and I dont even know what the hell is going on. So much confusion and chaos... we still don't know what the deal is... but it seems we could have gotten more out of Rice's contract than what we did get. P.S. Sidenote Does anyone know what channel NBA TV is on in San Antonio Time Warner Digital Cable? Thanks!
Revisionist history. First of all, the luxury tax didn't even come into play until after the 4.5 mill trade exception had expired. That 4.5 mill trade exception we had was more or less the first significant trade exception in the NBA (new feature of the CBA). No one, the Rockets included, was fully aware of its capabilities. Nor were teams nearly as salary cap savvy, in part because the luxury tax wasn't an issue for a couple more years, and in part because most teams' contract structures were left over from past CBAs. Further, we acquired that in a trade where we could hardly be considered the ones clearing cap room- Steve Francis. We also made the move to sign Mo Taylor that offseason, and gave a 2nd round pick a 6 year early bird contract; the offseason in which we acquired the exception, we had already made the huge Pippen deal, and signed Shandon Anderson...how many moves did you want the Rockets to make? One summer we sign Quitten to a huge deal of ~12 mill per year, then next we make full use of our MCE in Shandon and trade for Francis followed by extending Cato for 42 mill, and then next we again use our whole MCE and dole out a full 6-year Early Bird contract, and Les isn't letting the team spend? Even further, that was an offseason before a much anticipated 16 million dollar cap windfall of Hakeem's retireme...decision to go to a different team. Using that trade exception would have cut into that windfall. Judging this trade before seeing what we do with the trade exception is like criticizing the Grizzles for trading Abdur-Rahim for a draft pick before seeing who the draft pick (Pau Gasol) is, and what he can do.
His expiring contract wouldn't have meant anything to the Rockets next year had they kept it. Because of all those Bird-Exception signings like Steve MoTay, Mooch, Cato; the Rox were gonna be over the cap next year even with Glen's contract coming off the books. Tecnically, they were over the cap by about $18 million prior to this trade, so that $9 million coming off would have left them still unable to sign a FA next summer. But as far as the NBATV thing goes, Time Warner doesn't carry it just yet in any city, but they just signed a deal to start soon. So I don't know what channel it will be on over there.
Edit's not working, so a whole new post... http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=stein_marc&id=1624097
Trade exceptions & the Rockets Not to burst anyone's bubble, but the last time the organization had a trade exception, they let it expire without EVER using it. It was a 4.5 million exception, and the team just sat on it. I hope they have something up their sleeves, and a big splash is forthcoming. Otherwise giving up all those first round picks is pretty dubious. DD
Well at least they did TRY to use it, once, didn't they? And stupid Golden State screwed us for no good reason.. grrrr unless I am thinking of something else
