$55 million is the Alexander cap on the Rockets?

I was going to post the article from the Chronicle yesterday but I was so slammed at work that I was never able to get around to it.

But did anyone else see that interview with Alexander where he said he didn't want to be over $55 million next year and get hit with the luxury tax? According to Davo, we're at $54 million right now. Next season, we'll have to contend with the free agency of Bullard, Olajuwon (if he does not retire), Taylor, and Anderson (if he opts out). What will this $55 million luxury-tax-cap mean for resigning these guys and for courting other FAs?

One thing is I'm not sure if I understand the luxury tax properly (and won't look it up now). Alexander was talking about it like he was going to stay under $55 million though. Davo, if you can get that article from the Chronicle archives, I'd do it -- it was very interesting as far as the future of our cap is concerned.

I don't see the 55 Mill as a problem. We'll fall below the cap anyway, assuming Hakeem retires or signs for a small sum and it'll be near impossible to go back over by 7-8 mill (it'd be like giving Los or Bull max contracts)

Next year we will own Bull and Los 4 mil each, then kick in another 5 mil for Walt and thats 3 guys off the top who will be overpaid next year. And Cato will have a hell of a time showing me he is 6 mil, cause he hasnt proven to be worth the 5 he is getting this year. Well, so far..

I don't think Bull is coming back. I thought I heard he was off to broadcasting full time, then again, I also heard Hakeem was retiring...

Thanks JV - I'll check it out. I'm not too worried about Les setting a self imposed cap at $55Mil. A lot of clubs will follow suit because they don't want to pay the luxury tax, plus the salary cap makes it increasingly difficult to exceed the cap, unless you make a habit of trading for players who are just about to qualify for bird rights.
