1. Howard Hughes was born in Humble Texas 2. Katharine Hepburn is not related to Audrey Hepburn in any way. 3.Scarface was originally made in 1932 modeled after the life of Al Capone. 4. Leadbelly made a song entitled "Howard Hughes" "Get up in the morning, put on your shoes, read about Howard Hughes" 5. The man probably suffered from OCD and paranoid schizophrenia watching a Scorcese flick is like a history lesson....
I was able to watch "Gangs of New York" without constantly thinking about how much I hate Ole 12-Year-Old, aka Leonardo. That's how good Scorcese is. I'll probably check this flick out, too, and I mean I HATE DiCaprio. Perhaps this would also be a prudent time to draw attention to the Taxi Driver quote I have cleverly paced in my sig.
I assume not in the movie - By the age of 60, Hughes was so addicted to codeine that he was known to spend 20 hours on the toilet as a result of the opiate-induced constipation.
I knew #2, #3, and recently learned about #5. I probably knew #1 also but didn't retain it. That one and #5 I found out from the Internet Movie database website - us.imdb.com Now, I did NOT know that.
Here is another interesting trivia fact about Howard Hughes: "Industrialist Howard Hughes once bought every available seat from New York to Los Angeles to be sure she (Ingrid Bergman) would accept a ride in his private plane." That is from the Internet Movie Database site but actually from the trivia section on Ingrid Bergman instead of Hughes.
Nope... The Wright brothers are, for lack of a better term, over-rated All they did was fly first, and it's not like it wouldn't have happened without them... Curtis was far more influential during the early years of flight than the Wright Brothers, in fact, they were completely obsessed with Curtis and while he was innovating (put wheels on his plane!) and promoting flight, the Wright Brothers were busy filing lawsuits and trying to "own" flight Curtis invented the aileron (instead of bending the wing), built the first float plane, he made the first takeoff from water and landing on water, Curtiss built the first U.S. Navy aircraft, called the Triad, and also trained the first two naval pilots
Another interesting fact about Howard Hughes is that he is buried here in Houston, and barely a handful of people went to his funeral.
To be quite honest it wasnt that great. On a scale of 1-10, I'd give it a 6..... Leonardo still looks like he's 14!!! His Howard Huges isnt convincing enough for me. Maaaaybe towards the end when he wore a moustache more often, but he wasnt heavy enough, not wrinkle enough face and when he was shirtless, his breasts looks like little boys! Nothing taking away from the performance, sure it was a very good acting job. Leonardo just doesn't look like a grown man ever in this movie. Thats Hollywood for you. The Tommy Lee Jones, Howard Hughes Movie is still my favorite!!!! I wish I had a copy of it! edit: in that case....I just ordered it from Amazon!
Warning spoilers ahead. I agree with that... I never get a sense that he is getting older AT ALL. I mean, the only way that I actually figured he changed physically was after the accident... which is when he actually started with the mustache as well. To me that showed more of a deterioration in character and body, as opposed to him actually ageing. For about 20 (!) years he looks exactly the same. To me they should have started adding a bit of grey on the sides of his hair, maybe add a bit of weight, change his hair the slightest bit... I never got the sense he was 20 years older than Ava Gardner. I only realised afterwards when reading about the real guy. Leo did a decent acting job, but it is a problem that he can't look the right age.
He can't EVER look the right age, in ANY film, unless it happens to be a film about Michael Jackson's "friends."
I am going to agree with the last two comments. while he did an amazing job in the performance, it certainly was hard to suspend disbelief over the fact that the film covered a time span of over twenty years and Leo did not age except for the facial hair, he grew a beard for "Catch me if you can" but even a span of five to ten years was believeable because he put on some pounds(he started thin as a teenager then plumped up when he was playing 20 something)
I used to hate DiCaprio for Titanic, but now I like that he tends to do projects a little less fluffy than, say, Ben Affleck.
I worked at a temp job about 8 years ago at the old Hughes Tool building off Wayside. (It was owned by an OiL & Gas Co. then) My first day on the job, they had to tell me to watch for hidden doors and walkways in the building because there were so many they weren't sure they found them all yet. He's buried in that cemetary off of Washington isn't he?
Glenwood Cemetary, the entrance is off Washington. In the winter when the vines are dead on the cemetary fence along Memorial Drive, you can see the tombstone that says Hughes on it. If your driving west on Memorial out of downtown, look for the tombstone on the right as you cross the second bridge just past the police memorial monunment.
