Link Niners lineman Herrion dies after game; cause unknown Aug. 21, 2005 CBS SportsLine.com wire reports DENVER -- San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Thomas Herrion collapsed in the locker room and died Sunday morning, shortly after the 49ers played the Denver Broncos in a preseason game. Herrion, a 6-foot-3, 310-pound guard, was on the field for San Francisco's 14-play, 91-yard drive that ended with a touchdown with two seconds left. Players had finished listening to coach Mike Nolan address them in a postgame meeting when Herrion collapsed. Medics administered CPR on him and took him to an ambulance that rushed him to a nearby hospital. About three hours later, 49ers spokesman Aaron Salkin confirmed that Herrion had died. The cause of death was not immediately known. AP NEWS The Associated Press News Service I hate hearing about people dying but when you hear about an athlete dying its always a shock. I feel for his family.
The powers that be need to really look into this. There is obviously a MAJOR problem when you have players in ANY sport dropping dead after a game.
Man, I thought it was going to be Katy alum Eric Heitmann. Not that it isn't any less sad because it's not, but it's someone I have a personal connection to. RIP. +
When they say "collapsed", does this mean like... over-exhaustion? Like over working the body. I never really knew. But yeah, this is sad news.
This is a really sad and bizzarre case. On the news they were just showing him walking off the field and he looked great. He had his head held high and was walking easy. He didn't look tired or hurt at all.
This just in, they said the autopsy did not show why he died. They're looking more into other things like toxicity that will take 3 weeks or more. It's strange, because it seemed not heart attack or heat stroke or whatever which could show why he died after they did the autopsy. My guess would be he had some other condition just happened to act up and take his life.
According to a news report, the team had just finished a post game meeting and were standing, holding hands to pray when he slumped over and fell to the ground. It really doesn't seem heat related or athletic related. Some speculation in the same report mentioned that he had gone through a pretty rapid weight loss and that it Could be somehow related to that. Although that was just specualtion.
Terrible news. He finally reach his dream (play in the NFL, I think) and then he dies. sad story. RIP
