Big time players pour in 7 points a quarter on average in my opinion. Yao had 5.8 last night. Thats good. But what stat stood out in my opinion?

    FIFTY MINUTES PLAYED

And if Yao played 50 minutes and still scored 41 points, grabbed over 15 boards. Thats major progress.

Stamina building. Strength building. Conditioning building.

Playing excellent ball in the last 20 games....hmm...

Whats next? Domination in the playoffs?

If Yao had just a DECENT point guard, he would be scoring 20+PPG. He still needs to get tougher and quit with the freakin layups. You're 7'6"---Throw it down!

actaully if you consider that the three overtimes roughtly equal 1.25 "quaters" (since they are five minutes each). Yao scored 7.8 pts a quarter

7 points a quarter is asking for a 28 ppg average. That's definitely big time! Keep in mind that the top 2 ppg leaders (McGrady and Iverson) are averaging 27.4 ppg each and "big time" players like Garnett and Duncan are averaging 24.9 and 23.1 respectively (of course that's just under 5.8 points per quarter :D ).

Just wanted to put your opinion of big time players in perspective.

I defintely share your excitement about Yao maintaining his stamina through a 50 minute game, however!

IF he can continue to play the amount of minutes so he doesnt have to rest for half the game...

AND he finally has figured out that he doesnt have to pass out of the double teams...

he can easily put up 28-30 a night.

in the past...and evern in the first3 quarters of last nights game...almost everytime they would throw a double at him...he would pass out..

until the 4th and into the OTs...

then he got mad and started taking it to them even with 2 or even 3 players around him.

this is what he needs to do for him to become the truely elite center we need.

he gets enough touches to score that many now...it is just that most teams have figured out that if you double or triple him, he will pass out most of the time without hesitation. There is really very little reason why he shoudlnt be able to take it to the basket even with the defeders on him....even if they manage to stop him from making the basket, they get fouls called on them.

This is the most promising improvement in his game I have seen all season.

Keep it up big man! :D

The best players practice against two or three defenders. At 7'6 he should be able to beat the double team when he wants to do it.

Since each OT is only 5 mins, wouldn't it be 41 divided by ~5?

I would love to see YAo's endurance enable him to play heavy minutes with the kind of fire, and skill he did last night. It was really fun to watch him.

Just some things I noticed at the game last night...

First, it was an awesome game by Yao, but even still, you wish he would have shot even more. Granted, he did go to the line a fair amount, so the 21 shots are really understating his role in the offense last night, and, as usualy, Yao always made the smart pass out of a double team or a situation where he was too far from the basket and putting the ball on the ground would be inviting a little 6 foot guard to come in and steal it. That said, his power move through the triple team in overtime is mroe of what you want to see, and not just because it went in. In either case, if you've shot the ball 21 times and made 15, you rpobably should have shot it at least another ten times.

Along with that point, the team still has some horribly stupid play, obviously, as the game shoudl hae never even been close. Take Pryzbilla fouling out. Now, good ole Joel wasn't doing a good job on Yao anyway, but he certainly was a significantly bigger body than his replacement, N'Diaye - who had yet to play a minute of the game at that point. So, like clockwork, the Rockets fail to involve Yao in the offense significantly until the third overtime, deciding to rather feed an inept (last night) Mo Taylor in the post right after N'diaye checks in.

Hope I wasn't too pessimistic. It was pretty cool that I was at the game last night - I was at the one in 2001 against the Pacers, too.

    JayZ,

I thought the exact same thing.

Yao would touch the ball... great things would happen... Rockets get back in the game...

Revert to "let's not try so hard to throw it in the post" mode.... like a mouse shocking itself on an electrode... 3pter... shock...turnover... shock... fall behind...

I said, "One of these OT's they are gonna figure it out and give it to Yao more than once or twice... either that or they'll lose." I give the Hawks O credit though, they were shredding our D, taking it to the hoop like they were unguarded.

It was great! That's what I loved seeing last night, finally. Let's hope he keeps it up.
