I know there's probably been a few threads on this already, but what are your impressions between the two gaming systems. I love sport sim games (2k8, Madden, and MLB 2k) and would primarily be using the system for these games.

Also, if you're a fan of XBox, is it worth it to buy the Premium or will the Core system do?

    Thanks!

never buy a Core, it is completely useless

sports games and playing multi-player sports games is much better on the 360

Why is it useless? Its the same system just with a smaller memory drive, one which can be augmented with a separate 20 gb hard drive if needed.

its pretty bare bone and by the time you by the HD cables and a hard drive (which is needed for playing older xbox games and if you want to use xbox live i think) its going to be more expensive than the premium...also i dont think it comes with a wireless controller which now i think about it is one of the greatest developments to console gaming.

and yeah sports sims are better on the 360s...madden/ncaa 08 football had issues running at 1080p/60fps on the ps3 (could only do 30fps) but no issues on the 360s. the 2k series for basketball is awesome for the 360.

i think the 20gb hard drive is like 100 bucks alone unless they've dropped the price since the elite came out.

if you can afford it...get the premium

Yea well the thing is, it will be needed! If you buy everything seperately it ends up costing you a little more. Like Kepow said, the core is useless. The core does not come with any memory. No headset, no hd cables, and no wireless controller. Useless.

The PS3 was fun while I had it, but there just wasn't enough going on with it to keep it. No games. The only thing I used it for was that little app that uses your PS3 to help medical research or something. Blu-ray is nice but not worth the price cause I want to play games! If the price goes down to $399 (which is the price of a premium 360) then I will buy a PS3. Until then, I LOVE my 360!

Get the premium 360...I have the core and kinda wish I had paid the extra cash to upgrade.

Im having a ridiculously good time with the 360 right now...online gaming with nba 2k8, madden, and Halo is too much fun.

NBA 2k8 probably runs better on the PS3 from what I see and hear. EA games have clearly had problems although there has been strong indications that the 09 titles will be developed on the PS3 and then ported to the 360. Personally I would doubt that, EA and Microsoft have developed a strong relationship and there are at least 2X more sports gamers on the 360 according to discs sold.

Core on Xbox seems like a waste of money, the new 40GB PS3 "core" however looks like a steal at 399.

ok Drew. I was in your shoes back in July. I got a deal from a good guy on eBay (if you want I can get you his information) for the Premium system. Comes with HD cables ($30 sold seperately), Wiresless controller, HEADPHONES.... all that.

I didnt think Id ever use the headphones but Im always on Xbox Live and use them NONSTOP. Xbox 360 (Premium) is the ULTIMATE gaming experience. I too am a Sim gamer with NBA2k8. BTW the deal I got was a Premium Xbox 360 New In Box, bought it outright for $299 with $40 shipping. Total was like $345.

It depends when you want a system.

The PS3 lineup doesn't really hit it's stride till 2008. I think they have only around 5 exclusives this holiday season. While Drakes Fortune looks amazing, I'm not sure it's going to keep you content if you don't think much of the existing PS3 library. Haze might be good but we haven't seen much gameplay. And although Ratchet and Clank is really impressive in the busyness of the gameplay, I'm not sure if it is deep enough to be all that fun through out the whole game.

There are plenty of great games out on the 360 that if you haven't played yet, can completely carry you through the holiday season.

if you're hardcore, like my friend is, he actually uses a wired controller. says you can tell a difference when shooting in halo and other games, guess being wired makes it quicker, says it helps him a ton

Sports-wise, the two systems pretty much have the same games to offer you. Sony does develop their own sports games, but only MLB The Show is really any good (though it is considerably better than MLB 2K IMO, at least from what I played). Their NBA games have some interesting ideas, but the gameplay isn't very good at all IMO, especially if you're into realistic sim games (if you like more arcade-style sims with easy controls...it might be decent).

In terms of other games, both systems have some great games, but right now the 360 definitely has the upper hand. A lot of games have been released in the extra year that it was out, and the gap is widening a bit this holiday season. This will probably start to even out in 2008 though, and in fact, the PS3 may end up with more exclusives (assuming 3rd parties keep roughly the same stance...which isn't a safe assumption at all given current trends).

Yeah, I'd avoid the Core system if I were you, as everyone has said. I guess your best options are the $350 Premium 360 and the (soon to be released) $400 PS3. Both are/will be involved in holiday deals, so take that into consideration (not simply a matter of $350 vs $400). The 360 has 20GB of storage and no WiFi and the $399 PS3 will have 40GB of storage and WiFi (IIRC anyway). Probably isn't a big deal unless you want to download a lot of demos or something like that (this is a problem for me though...even my 60GB PS3 is a little low on storage space :(). Do note that the 40GB PS3 will not be backwards compatible with PS2 games, so don't use that as a reason to get one; if it is that important, you'll have to get a 60GB or 80GB PS3.

Minor note, but I don't think either game supports 1080p (on PS3 or 360). It would probably take a lot of work to support 1080p/60fps...something I don't think EA is really all that interested in doing. :)

Just out of curiosity, would the lack of PS2 BC keep you from getting a $400 PS3? I remember you reacting negatively towards that news in one of the previous threads. It seems like the 40GB PS3 will be released 10/28 for $400...not sure why SCEA hasn't announced it officially yet (maybe still working out the details since I think it is bundled with Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray).

From a development standpoint, it just makes more sense to have the PS3 as the lead SKU. It just allows for a much easier process, at least given what some devs have said. It would probably allow them to create a better 360 version of their games than had they developed the games on the 360 first as well (especially if they spent a lot of resources trying to make the two versions identical, or close to it).

That's what makes the most sense to me anyway. Of course, if EA is going to buy the Xbox business from Microsoft, then maybe this doesn't make as much sense. :p

I've seen a pretty good deal of gameplay videos on Haze, but mostly from public events (not official trailers or anything like that). I admit it has been from mostly the same levels though IIRC. Most of them have been that forest level where they demonstrate the Nectar abilities, and how the chemical affects both the gameplay and the story (EX: Nectar prevents you from seeing all the death and destruction that you've caused...or maybe that was the battle suit, can't remember). Think I saw some vehicle levels, as well as a level where you play as a rebel instead of a Mantel soldier. Not sure if we've seen anything lately though, which might be what you were alluding to. It did look pretty rough in some areas (not to mention that Ubisoft did a crappy job of marketing it), so it would be nice if we got some more videos that could reassure us on the quality of the game. Or, better yet, a demo. :)

Just a bad joke, loosely "based" on some recent moves by MS and EA (EX:MS selling off or not pursuing some developers ---> MS wants to sell off the Xbox business).

as of now, for multi-platform games, almost always the 360 version is better looking...we're talking a slight difference though, nothing huge

however, there are quite a few sports games where the 360 version runs at 60fps while the PS3 version only runs at 30fps. that is very noticeable

Technically speaking, the PS3 is the more powerful system (quite a bit too, at least in some areas).

At this point in time though, this is only really noticeable in PS3-exclusive games (especially those developed by Sony). For 360/PS3 games, 360 games tend to look a little better and/or perform better. This might (or will?) change as developers get a better grasp on how to develop for the PS3 though, particularly when it comes to developing for the PS3 and 360. Probably won't be a big change though (probably just slightly better graphics on the PS3 instead of the 360...or better yet, identical graphics on both systems).

I only ask because my 360 finally gave up on me. Of course, I got it from Costco and was able to return the POS for a brand new one. Usually you can keep your hd and just swap consoles, but I told them I wanted everything new. I was thinking about donating it to some poor kid this holiday and picking up a PS3 for myself. I love the 360 games but I really hate MS. I'm not going to miss Halo that much (thanks to War Hawk) and would definitely enjoy having free online + blue-ray. If the graphics are on par and the gameplay just as smooth, then I'd be an idiot to pass up on a PS3. At least Sony knows how to make quality products. I'll probably pick one up once they start bundling it with the new rumble controllers.

So that's my plan unless you have a reason for me to stick with the 360.

    Thanks
