Donavan Mitchell Signs 4 Years/$273 Million Extension With Cleveland Cavaliers

    BREAKING: Cleveland Cavaliers All-NBA star Donovan Mitchell has agreed on a four-year, $273 million maximum contract extension that includes a player option for the 2030-31 season and a full trade kicker, CAA's Co-Head of Basketball, Austin Brown, tells ESPN.

    The numbers on Donovan Mitchell’s contract extension:

    Year 1: $60.9M
    Year 2: $65.8M
    Year 3: $70.6M
    Year 4: $75.5M

    This is crazy! I do think the CBA will get changed after the 2029 season to make the 2nd apron less onerous... so maybe it doesn't crush the Cavs like it would under the current CBA. A smaller, athletic guard getting paid 35% of the salary cap... just doesn't work in the psuedo salary cap 2nd Apron era that we are in today. Celtics broke up their team. The TWolves gave away a valuable player. OKC selling off their bench. The Cavs are already selling off their bench with Mitchell at only 30% of the cap... I am glad that the Rockets only gave Alpi 20% of the cap on his rookie extension.

    The Cavs were in a much more difficult position than the Celtics because Mitchell only had one year left in his contract while JB had 3 years!

    Since LeBron is probably coming, they could not afford to rock the boat. LeBron doesn't give a care what happens to the Cavs cap situation after he's gone in a couple of years.

    The hard reality of max extensions colliding with the 2nd apron continues.
