Regardless of whether or not one believes we can be can be contenders next season, most of us agree that adding a good flor general, or two, is probably the most important thing that can raise our floor as a team. From cutting down turnovers to getting our scorers in their spots, to better entry passes, getting us in our sets, to spacing the floor, and generally making life easier for everyone on the floor…it’s critical. I don’t want to give up assets for more old players. Guys like Kyrie and Jrue are breaking down health-wise and they don’t fit our timeline. here are a few floor generals that could potentially be acquired and are not too old: Cason Wallace Immanuel Quickley Scoot Henderson Darius Garland LaMelo Ball Davion Mitchell Who do you think would make sense as a floor general target?
I wonder if Blazers would Trade For KD Henderson, and Clingan is who im going for. What ever the package, would they bite?
Is Cason Wallace a floor general? I don’t view him that way. He’s more of an Ayo Dosunmu type than a floor general/PG. His defense is elite, his shooting is ok, and I guess people view him as a potential blow-up candidate if he got more opportunity on a different team. Immanuel Quickley is a good high volume 3 point shooter and decent scorer. He’s only 6’2 and he’s skinny so seems like your classic weak link on defense similar to Darius Garland. Owed 3/97.5 the next 3 years. straight up don’t trust Scoot Henderson…I’ll pass Darius Garland is a better playmaking Quickley to me. Apparently his toes are fcked up, and he’s owed 42 and 45 mil the next 2 seasons. Is LaMelo available? He’s the most talented and the biggest name out of this group. He’s fun to watch, but he plays unserious basketball. Dude launches threes like he’s 2019 36 ppg Harden, but he does it while averaging 20 ppg. Play-in game vs the Heat, he shot 16 threes and made 2 of them. Absurd Davion Mitchell is Temu Cason Wallace out of this group, I guess I’d go Wallace even tho he’s not a floor general to me
someone is going to have to explain to me how we have any shot at Cason Wallace … he’s under contract , cheap and the last thing thunder need is draft picks and we have no player better or equal to offer that would make sense financially
Cason is nice but he's a 2. Doesn't handle like that. I'd be down for anyone else on the list. Scoot might need another year under Fred to develop a bit more (and to also depress his extension).
FVV is it. He's here, we don't have to spend assets, he plays defense, he shoots high volume 3's, he doesn't turn the ball over, he's no longer going to demand big contracts going forward. Younger PGs: Davion, Nembhard, Rollins, Suggs, Henderson Vets: White, Jrue Imperfect backups: Shead, Jones Combo guards: Podziemski, Donsumu, Black, Wallace At the end of the day, the attainment cost, contracts and in some cases downgrades from Fred's abilities will just leave us sticking with Fred and hoping Reed keeps developing. Overpaid poor POA defenders like Garland and Quickley are non options IMO, and LaMelo is going to be too expensive and is a pretty questionable leader/general despite his immense talent.
Dejounte Murray or Ty Jerome. Probably one of the more realistic trades Is Anthony Black on magic worth anything?
Yeah, need 2 or 3 more guards in the rotation if we can’t rely on full health same player FVV. Quickly, Ty Jerome, Marcus Smart, NAW, Scoot Henderson, Ayo Donsunmu, Davion Mitchell, VJ Edgecombe, Ryan Rollins, Max Christie, Derrick White I’m not against the vet like taking on a vet like Jrue Holiday’s contract and getting future picks with it, that fits our timeline. Keep Amen, Sengun, KD and the good future picks. Be aggressive with everything else. DFS/Capela are matching salary. Reed and Jabari are bait. A 2029 Rockets 1st can go. FVV and Adams depending on their progress. Tari Eason S&T only for top tier guard.
Scoot's looked and shot a lot better of late. Healthy, and young...he seems more of a scorer, but I'd love him in our backcourt. I imagine the Blazers would want quite a bit.
Why are we committed to 1 point guard though? just start a 2nd one at SG and get rid of the role player power forward position altogether. Our best 3 players can all play the 4. FVV type Jrue or Scoot or White, etc KD Amen Sengun
That's just wrong. He's a career 37% 3PT shooter which is decisively above league average for any season in NBA history. Combine that with the fact that he's been averaging about 9 attempts per game over the last 5 years and that 40% of those are unassisted, his volume combined with his percentage and level of difficulty of shots makes him a flat out very good 3PT shooter. Fred is a good shooter, he's a great defender and he's a good low TO facilitator. Those 3 traits combined are very difficult to find. People love ******** on Fred, yea he had a down year last season, is coming off a big injury, and has never been a respectable rim scorer, but he's not a joke of player, he's not easy to replace. We have Reed? I hope we pick up a SG with some ball handling/passing skills, and or 3rd string PG (Thornton or Larrea #39?). But, between Fred and Reed there will not only be no minutes available at PG (when healthy), they will have to share the floor for at least 5-10 minutes a night. Whoever we add to them has to be able to guard 2's full time pretty much.
I've been down on Fred since last year and wanted him replaced but you can't just replace him with a better shooter or a better driver and expect the team to be better - whoever that guy is has to be a point guard first, as you said, that combination of skills is very difficult to find. I also understand that the reason they kept him last offseason was largely driven by the fact that they didn't have the financial ability to replace him and keeping him around at the cap hit that they did preserved their ability to make a future move. You can't just release a guy while over the cap and lose that over the cap space - it's the 2018 Rockets all over again not keeping Ariza or Luc and replacing them with 5 dudes on the minimum hoping like hell someone outperforms their contract. (This goes against the Tilman is cheap narrative) Bottom line, it's entirely possible to upgrade from FVV, it just ain't easy to do.
We have plus-creators at: C (Sengun) PF (Durant) G/F (Amen) I can't think of a team in the entire NBA that should be less desperate for a PG. Fred is perfectly fine for the role, it's the easiest PG job in the league. You can't have stars at every position. Fred is a perfect backcourt mate for Amen both on and off ball. We know he can feed Sengun. Surely he'll be good at setting up KD. We have two developing PG's as well in Amen and Reed. We have so many back-breaking needs to prioritize. We need a rim protector, a stretch 5 and a SG before even thinking about another playmaker.
I don't think we really know what Cason Wallace would look like with the ball in his hands every play, that's just not his role on OKC. Him and Scoot Henderson are the two guys I like most off your list because they're the ones with the most potential to break out with a change of scenery IMO and end up being a good value over contract. Ty Jerome is another guy you didn't mention that I think could maybe play point guard. About to turn 29 though so not as good of a time frame fit as some of these others, but still better than FVV in that regard. I guess I would take Darius Garland, but it would have to be for FVV + salary filler, or for KD. I'm not giving up any of the young guys for him. Good player but he kind of just is what he is, fringe all-star. If Fred were age 29 and healthy I would agree. But he's not, he's age 32 and coming off a serious surgery. I don't like going back out there and trusting him to run this offense if we're moving on from the idea of Amen/Reed as full-time point guards. There's too much of a chance that he ends up looking like DFS, just completely cooked.
Agreed that FVV is perfectly fine. What we truly need is a veteran backup who can play if required [ie FVV injured] and takes care of the ball. Reed is ideally getting reps at PG, but he needs lots of growth and simply cannot handle it fulltime
