Ricky Rubio: I was one in Minneapolis because it was the YouTube era. And I had to create that character even though I didn’t want to. I never fell in love with the culture or traditions. For me, the impact the U.S. has, both generally and in basketball—they’ve turned the NBA into a show, into a business. They’ve left behind the love of basketball, and that’s also happening in Europe. So what do I take from the U.S.? What I wouldn’t do—not what I would.

Love it! He managed to remain himself, humble and not buy into the bullshit that money and fame brings.

Ricky lost his spirit when Harden broke his ankles.

He shoulda wise up early and choose where to sign based on whoever has Giannis, Jokic, Mutumbo, Yao type players. America also used to have Grant Hill, Shane Battier, etc

Not everyone is going to fall in love with the culture of another country.

Having said that - the culture of the NBA really isn't the culture of the United States.

Regardless, Rubio has had a very tough life - he was made a global celebrity at 16 years old, and was spoiled at an early age - complaining about having to go to Minnesota when he should have been a senior in high school. He really struggled in the NBA, never became the player he was expected to become and ultimately became a solid role player.

He was very close to his mother and she died after he was only in the league for a little while.

He is not retired and his mid 30's and is probably now for the first time reflecting on his life and where he wants to go forward.

Maybe not the career he wished for, but it sounds like he is in a mental state where he is at peace and true to himself
