Where would Yuli be at if he had played in the MLB since the beginning?

Firstly, he wouldn't be an Astro this season because we wouldn't have been able to afford him. He would probably close to 3000 hits right now would have contended for an MVP or two. The guy is a professional hitter. Let's compare Yuli to Pujols over the same ages.

Rk Name From To Age G PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS TB GDP HBP SH SF IBB OPS+
    1 Yuli Gurriel 2016 2021 32-37 578 2395 2210 298 642 152 5 81 351 15 9 129 256 .290 .331 .474 .805 1047 64 22 0 34 4 116
    2 Albert Pujols 2012 2017 32-37 870 3755 3419 432 895 164 1 169 589 26 6 276 442 .262 .319 .459 .777 1568 130 25 0 35 56 115

They have very similar numbers except Yuli is a better hitter but Pujols hit more homeruns.

Yep. He’d be a hall of famer. Adrian Beltre would be a good comparison, although my guess is he’d have been just a bit short of Beltre’s 84.1 career fwar. But 60-70 fwar and 3000 hits would be likely.

Depends on if he would have played 3B.

I suspect if he would have come to the US far earlier he would have been a SS who moved to 3B in his early 30s. He could still play a decent 3B today if needed.

Yuli is one of the biggest steals in MLB history. For what we pay him, holy sheet.

Very good comparison but looking at Yuli's numbers in Cuba, I'm thinking Yuli would have had better early career numbers. Not as many homeruns though.

This is hilarious considering the hate that was piled on Yuli last season in here.....

Yuli sucked last year. Any 1B who puts up a 79 wRC+ is not going to have many fans. Given it was his age 36 season it was totally reasonable for the average (or even fully engaged) fan to think he was done.

Or... it was a small sample size from a crazy pandemic season and people were overreacting.

Easy to say that in hindsight. But 279 pa isn’t that small of a sample. I was really worried about him. Dude is in his late 30s, any decent stretch of decline at that age is usually a really bad sign. I love him so I’m glad he defied the odds and it looks like he was just playing hurt or in a weird extended slump.

It just goes to show that some "old men" are just in a slump, not headed for the rocking chair. late 2019 and 2020 looked like a trend expected of old men and what young men consider to push then into retirement.

Many play too long and some retire too early. Yuli looks like he would have been the latter if not for re-signing him to a favorable contract.

We probably wouldn't have been able to resign if he didn't have an off year last season considering our tax situation. Maybe it's fate.

The Astros REALLY lean heavy on their scouting and coaches and measurements.... the actual numbers don't mean as much.
