Then there is the subsidized housing that is so cheap that even meager welfare payments put quite a dent in it. And don't forget the practically free healthcare, and the fact that these people get federal income tax refunds far greater than what they paid. Texas isn't even particularly generous, but our state aid combined with federal aid is still too high. Being poor is supposed to suck, which then inspires poor people to work hard and improve their conditions. A comfortable semi middle class lifestyle where any extra income you earn is taken away by reducing your subsidies doesn't cut it.

This needs to be shown again. I'm still waiting for someone to explain why a family earning nothing should be subsidized up to the standard of living of a family earning $40k.



The welfare system as currently constructed is completely broken and removes almost all incentives for low income people to work. The line in this graph should be straight with no dips while moving from left to right.

Yes, they do. You could survive on Food Stamps though. We get WIC, but not food stamps. Our max food stamps benefit in TX would be $320. Our budget is $200/month(Including non-food items).

 

Yes with 9% unemployment this is really a huge concern right now. What year is this?

BTW does anyone know that the wait for housing is often seveal years or more in the Houston area. Facts are important before the Fox News crowd get all excited about the great life of poor mothers with children.

 

Can we send all those poor folks who want free housing to Haiti to help build their country? Let them work for a living and help people that are more in need.

30,000 people could help build a lot of housing in Haiti, or they could be put to work rebuilding New Orleans.

Well played. Now that was funny.

After growing up in poverty and a career in public service helping the very folks being belittled, I don't have as much of a sense of humor about it.

I know that most don't truly believe their remarks, but the sad part is, some do.

 

You have a food budget of $200/month? How many folks are in the household?

 

I agree the system has a lot of problems. That does not mean it's a bad idea.
