I think when an NBA team wins a championship, the rings should be divided into gold, silver, and bronze. Since there are 12 active players on the roster, the top 4 get gold rings, next 4 get silver rings, and last 4 get bronze rings. This way, their wouldn't be an argument over rings when debating who is a better player. For instance, Robert Horry would have 7 silver rings, whereas Wade has one gold ring...Wade wins. What do you think?
"Sorry Sam Cassell. I know you hit the game winning shot in Game 3 and we couldn't have won the series without you, but we view Hakeem, Otis, Kenny, and Vernon above you. Enjoy your silver ring!"
even though i am not a fan of hating players, this made crack up. You must spread some reputation before giving it to apollo33 again.
Also, the more I think about this, the more I'm pretty sure Horry would have been one of the 4 Rockets in 1995 who would get a gold ring in your scenario. Obviously it would be Hakeem and Clyde. Then Horry, Kenny Smith, Cassell, and Elie would be the next 4. I could easily see Horry getting the nod for a gold, thus still coming ahead of Wade in your argument.
Even though the notion that you win and lose as a team is nice, but the players are not paid the same. If the main guy on the team has a salary that's 25 times more than the 12th guy, then obviously the team concept only goes so far. In what job do you have two co-workers with that much difference in salaries? That is like someone making $50,000 and another one making $1,250,000. I think doing it this way, a guy winning a bronze ring would still have something to be proud of...at least he won something. He wouldn't feel too embarrassed that he did not contribute much, if any at all, to the team's success. I made a mistake earlier. What about the comparison between Gasol and Wade? Gasol would have 2 gold rings and Wade would have one gold ring. But...Wade has the MVP to top it off, so Wade wins again.
I think anything that encourages even more superstar fellatio than the massive amounts that already exist in the NBA is a bad idea. Plus who gets to decide who the 4th and 5th best players are...can you imagine the amount of ego bruising a guy would take if he got the silver ring but was arguably a gold ring guy. Basketball is truly a team game because of the defensive end. If you have LeBron and Kobe and your 5th best guy can't stay in front of his man, you are at best spinning your wheels and breaking even.
