what's the best way to get a real good deal on a nice hotel in SA?

like a 3 star retail average is ~$150.

    any suggestions? past experiences?

    I've stayed here several times.

It has a great location (right across the street from a set of stairs down to the Riverwalk) and the rooms have that great loft feeling.

The only downside is that you have to park a block away at a garage that costs $10.00 a day.

I can't help in terms of places to stay (I've always stayed at the Motel 6), but I hit up http://www.priceline.com all the time, and have yet to be disappointed.

I haven't taken the time to research their ratings, but I will recommend two hotels for you:

The Havana Riverwalk Inn (210) 222-2008

La Mansion del Rio Hotel (210) 518-1000

Both are very different kinds of hotels in that they are not your typical "new" kind of hotels. Google them and you'll see...

Oh, and if you're a cigar fan, go to the basement of the Havana for a great mojito and puff in Club Cohiba.

If you're looking for more of a traditional hotel, all of the major hotels are in SA, as well. If you aren't attached to being downtown, here's some advice...GO TO THE NORTH!

75 % of the populace live in the north and 85 % of the money is spent there. Crown Plaza Hotel (get the suite) is a favorite of mine (210) 828-9031 and is on 410 by the Airport. Good restaurants are nearby going west (generally) on the freeway. the only one I can think of going east is La Marginal on Nacogdoches (excellent!)

Oh, one last thing...1604 is where all the affluency is moving and hanging out (once again...northside of 1604). I hope this helps....
