Former NBA players and coaches will vote for rookie game participants
Panel to Select 'got milk?' Rookie Challenge Players

New York, Dec. 12 -- A select panel consisting of 15 former NBA players and coaches has been created to vote for participants in the got milk? Rookie Challenge at NBA All-Star 2003, it was announced today by NBA Deputy Commissioner Russ Granik.

"Last season the competition to get selected for the got milk? Rookie Challenge became so intense we decided future teams would be chosen by an independent group of experts," said Granik. "The panel members are all former NBA players or coaches who have remained involved in the game through their roles as broadcast commentators."

The panelists are: Sean Elliott, Tim Hardaway, Tom Tolbert and Bill Walton from ESPN; Danny Ainge, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and John Thompson from TNT; Quinn Buckner from FOX Sports Net Midwest; Mike Glenn from the Hawks Television Networks; Tom Heinsohn from FOX Sports Net New England; Rod Hundley from FOX Sports Net Rocky Mountain; Steve Jones from Blazer Broadcasting; Calvin Murphy from Rockets Television; and Jack Ramsay from ESPN Radio.

The got milk? Rookie Challenge will feature nine of the league’s top rookies vs. nine of the best second-year players on All-Star Saturday, February 8 in Atlanta’s Philips Arena at 4 p.m. Participants in the game will be announced on January 16 and coaches will be named on January 20.

The got milk?/Milk Mustache Campaign is sponsoring the NBA Rookie platform to highlight the importance of milk's bone-building calcium and eight other essential nutrients for active people, teens especially, who add about 15 percent of their height during these years. The platform includes the got milk? Rookie Challenge, the got milk? Rookie of the Month awards, the got milk? Rookie of the Year award and the got milk? All-Rookie Team.

I know who Calvin is going to be voting for. :)

Unfortunatley, I also know who Barkley is NOT going to be voting for.

If you guys think Barkley won't vote for Ming (I think thats what you're saying), you guys are crazy. Regardless of how much trash Barkley has talked about the big fella, I do think he'd like to see him succeed just so he could say "see, I told you guys all along he'd be great, I never doubted him, he's just improving faster than I thought he would."

Barkley might be a Ming hater right now, but I do think he has a respect for him.

I think Calvin Murphy would be a good coach for that game. It would be funny watching him have a heart attack while the players toss lob passes from 30 feet out...

Calvin: Come on, DeJuan!! Stop and Pop!! Take the easy 15 footer!

DeJuan Wagner: Screw you, Murph! I'm going to the hole!!

I just wondering, if Yao play for the allstar team, can he still play for this rookie game?

my guess is that Yao Ming will sit out the rookie game, like Duncan did.

I think Tom Tolbert, Bill Whalton, Kenny Smith, Steve Jones, and of courese Calvin Murph is going to put Ming in. That is already 5 votes in the box. Ming is in!

the only thing we need the votes for is eddie griffin on the sophomore team. they could have the voting process in any way shape or form and yao ming would easily make the rookie team. i'm still wondering how the voting for the real all-star game is since he might even go there instead.

From a marketing standpoint, there is no way the NBA doesn't at least have Yao in the rookie game...no matter what Barkley does.

This panel is only for those hard choices (the 9th-12th "best" rookies)
