Does anyone here actually use that feature? Do you like it? Is it just an option you can pick on a Blu Ray disc or what? There doesn't seem to be a ton of practical info out there on these, just a lot of marketing fluff, so I'm taking it to ClutchFans. TIA!
I'm in the market currently for a BIG television. Like 75+ inches. I'd love to go projector and go bigger, but the room for the television has a LOT of ambient light, and frankly I like that. Not interested in making my room all super dark with shades or whatnot. I have a 55 inch plasma with 3D capability now, but never cared much for it. My kids are just now getting to the age where they might like it, but probably still too young. - That being the case, I'm not prioritizing 3D at all. - I'm also not sold on 4k. I think it will be great when there is more content... but by that time I might be in the market for another tv again.... or at least might be if I don't spend the extra $$ to get the 4k now for the same size television. 1080p is pretty clear to me as is. - I am less clear on 120hz vs. 240 hz. Especially at my size range. Especially because I obviously watch a ton of basketball. Does refresh rate matter a bunch? I've spent a fair amount of time on AVSForum... and it is clearly a good and knowledgeable place, but you aren't likely to get a ton of direct responses to specific questions in a thread you might start... instead you have to find brands/models you are interested in and then sort through those threads... a huge time suck. In either case, to me, if you have kids who are 8+ and would definitely watch movies in 3D, no harm in looking for it. Otherwise, not necessary at all. We're not talking about having sports in 3D frequently.
It was a fad that is slowly dying away. You need a special Blu-ray player for it (which isn't much different in price than a normal blu ray player). Most new 3d TV's have the ability to change the image to 3d, so you don't really need dedicated content anymore... I just don't think it makes a movie more or less enjoyable. The movies that work best are the ones that were released in 3D in the theater... and you'll get 3 or 4 specific "3D" effects during the movie that make it worth it, I guess. You also still need glasses... and would need to purchase more if you want to watch with more than 2 people.
I had one for about a month before it was stolen and i liked it. I would download movies in 3d and watch them from usb. I also loved playing 3d games from the PS3. When i went to get a replacement TV, they had very few with 3d available, so I passed. It is fading. 3d p*rn is pretty cool.
You might want to check out the Screen Innovations Black Diamond Zero Edge projector screens which allow a bright picture even in ambient light. I am considering this option myself next time we upgrade our TV. The screens are expensive, but realistically you could use the screen indefinitely and just upgrade projectors as new technology comes out. For size and quality, this screen plus a decent projector will still be cheaper than a good 85 inch plus TV.
True, but that takes me down a different rabbit hole. The Black Diamond is, as you note, expensive. My wall could fit 120+ inches, and if I'm going projector, it's to REALLY go big. But at that size, the screen is really expensive. Of course, the DIYers on AVSForum would say you could do it yourself with various paints/sprays... but I have neither the time nor inclination to do that. I'm also in a room with a vaulted ceiling... and there's a fan hanging down from a pole in the middle that my wife would not be keen on replacing with a projector. All that said, if I did investigate that route, (1) what projector are you looking at for a high ambient light room, and (2) are there any services you know of where they will come out and help you think about the space? Eg... home theater installers, but not at the exhaustive price, yada, yada. Really I just need someone more knowledgeable then me, that isn't incentivized to gauge me into buying products, to look at the room, tell me their thoughts, what's doable, etc.
For whatever reason, I never got the DirecTV 3d PPV/other channels to work with my TV. I'm not sure what it was complaining about...maybe the HDMI cable...but the DirecTV receiver should have been able to pass a 3d signal to the HDTV directly over HDMI...but it never worked. I've only used the TV feature that simulates 3d. Then, you turn on and watch with the glasses. It was only ok imo. I think 3d is the most useless feature around personally. But, I'm not a big fan to begin with except in theaters. I'd rather have my HDTV not have 3d to save some money but it's pretty much standard nowadays. And, DirecTV at least is not big on it as they seem to be reducing content for it due to lack of viewership. And, don't get me started on those awful glasses. And, those shoes.
