2nd-Grader Suspended for Drawing of Gun

DENNIS TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A second-grader's drawing of a stick figure shooting a gun earned him a one-day school suspension.

Kyle Walker, 7, was suspended last week for violating Dennis Township Primary School's zero-tolerance policy on guns, the boy's mother, Shirley McDevitt, told The Press of Atlantic City.

Kyle gave the picture to another child on the school bus, and that child's parents complained about it to school officials, McDevitt said. Her son told her the drawing was of a water gun, she said.

A photocopy of the picture provided by McDevitt showed two stick figures with one pointing a crude-looking gun at the other, the newspaper said. What appeared to be the word "me" was written above the shooter, with another name scribbled above the other figure.

School officials declined to comment Friday. A message left at the superintendent's office Saturday was not returned.

Kyle drew other pictures, including a skateboarder, King Tut, a ghost, a tree and a Cyclops, the newspaper reported

That would make one kick-ass movie.

Seriously though, a suspension? At most get some counselor to evaluate the kid.

i drew much more violent pictures when i was in grade school. i think i outgrew drawings of water guns by the 1st grade. i had moved on to plasma cannons and rocket launchers by the 3rd grade.

I'm sure some people will say "What's the big deal? Every kid does it. This school district is crazy!" etc. But imagine if, five or six years from now, this kid comes to school with a gun and kills five classmates before turning the gun on himself. What would we say then? "Why didn't anyone see the warning signs?" Well, this is a warning sign, and I'm glad the district takes it seriously.

Besides, we don't know the whole story. Was this the first offense? Does this child have a history of violence? We're just getting the mom's side of the story and her perspective may be rather skewed by her feelings for her son.

I used to draw tanks and stick figures war all the time.

I probably would have been expelled?

I am glad I was raised in a time when reason was still applicable.

great points. they should have suspended him for drawing that cyclops as well. it's an unchristian figure. maybe if they don't see that warning sign then the kid is practicing witchcraft 5 years from now.

Yeah, that makes sense. Because, you know, killing your classmates and practicing a religion are the same thing.

It's amazing to me how people who don't work in schools, who aren't given the responsibility of educating hundreds of kids at a time, and who aren't charged with protecting the saftey of EVERY SINGLE KID are so quick to dismiss people who try to do the right thing.

This kid may have meant nothing with these drawings. On the other hand, he may have a 9mm Sig Sauer locked and loaded in his bedstand drawer. Until the school can determine for sure that this kid isn't a threat to others, they absolutely did the right thing in separating this kid from other students.

Another example of "zero tolerance" coming down to "lack 'o sense."

How about talking to him and getting to understand why he draws them instead of suddenly suspending him, like he actually did something wrong to begin with. I drew guns all the time in school, I'll draw one right now if you don't believe me

Maybe he didn't get suspended for just drawing a gun, but for drawing a picture of him shooting someone else.

Well if it was a SQUIRT gun like the article says, and most 2nd graders are big squirt gun fans...then what is the big deal?

Exactly. It was a perceived threat...

"Kyle gave the picture to another child on the school bus, and that child's parents complained about it to school officials, McDevitt said."

The parents may know of a bullying situation for all we know.

Maybe it's not a squirt gun. Just because the 2nd grader said it was a squirt gun after getting caught doesn't make it so.

You know who else also likes guns? Terrorists and Hitler.

Lock the kid up and throw away the key. This is America, dammit!!
