Those Pizza makers, haha they are funny I tell you, funny!! 25-story crucifix proposed ANN ARBOR, Mich., Jan. 29 (UPI) -- If Domino's Pizza founder Tom Monaghan has his way, the intersection of U.S. 23 and Michigan Route 14 never will be the same. Monaghan has proposed construction of a 250-foot crucifix, complete with a 40-foot Jesus. "Wow -- big cross," Michael Diebold, spokesman for the Lansing Diocese, told Tuesday's Detroit News. Monaghan, who also heads the Ave Maria Foundation, has submitted plans for the cross to Ann Arbor Township as part of a proposed campus for Ave Maria University. The site is part of an office park. The proposed crucifix would be just 20 feet shy of Ann Arbor's tallest building but would be taller than the General Motors Building. It would be twice the size of the Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro and would outstrip the tallest cross in the United States, in Groom, Texas, by 60 feet. Not everyone is thrilled with the proposal. "It's outrageous," said Patricia Blom, who lives within a half-mile of the site. "I'm a Methodist, but this will offend people in this multi-religious area. Blom and her husband have fought other plans floated by Monaghan, among them the failed convention center proposal that came to be knows as the "Leaning Tower of Pizza." "If this were a nonreligious building, people wouldn't give two thoughts to it," former Ann Arbor resident Joshua Raymond told the newspaper. "But being religious, it's controversial." No so, said Karen Mendelson. "The religious aspect doesn't really bother me, and I'm Jewish," she said. "But I just don't like things sticking up in the air. And at 25 stories, it going to be absurd-looking." Building the cross would require a zoning variance. Currently, the township prohibits structures taller than 35 feet.
... so the tallest thing is the area now is 3 stories, and he wants to build this thing 25 stories high!? Ya gotta wonder, is this in honour of God, or himself.
I've been all over the world, I've done all kinds of sh*t and I've seen ever more. And to me, there is no single image more terrifying than a crucifix. Dead Jesus scares the crap out of me.
Lynus, you know my response. As far as the crucifix goes, I wouldn't want it. I was raised Christian and I would classify myself as one over anything else. But this would offend me. I don't think it's a pleasant image. And it enhances my disgust at certain groups of Christians. I'm of the thought "practice what you want, but don't make me or anyone else." And my theory seems to disagree with many Christians. My ex-boyfriend would not rest until I let Jesue into my life. I know he cared about me and wanted me to be happy and well, but I have my opinions. I don't mind listening to other's opinions (infact, I love hearing theories and beliefs), but don't shove it down my throat. I consider this shoving.
ROTFLMAO!!!! Grizzled: Tremendous response. If the people there wanted it, great, but it sounds like this is something this guy just wants to do because he can.
It seems that in the past more has been done to promote architecture with religion. We see most of the architectural masterpieces in the past have been Churches or Mosques. The Hagia Sofia, Dome of the Rock, Reflecting Pool in Spain and many more throughout the world. I live in northwest Houston and when they began tearing an area down near my House, I was scared it was going to be a shopping strip or gas station etc, instead they made the Houston Temple for Mormons on Cypresswood and Champions forest drive and it is absolutely beautiful. But a cross this size would really scare me and I don't know how aesthetically pleasing it would be and what purpose it would serve. If he apted to build a large Cathedral, that would be much more relevant and useful, but its his money, I don't like Domino's pizza much so I can't complain its my money either!! Personally though, I still wonder why the Crucifix is revered as it is. I understand that Jesus gave his life on a Cross, but it is a particularly brutal Roman Death Tool. Though Jesus "died" in this roman form of punishment, it almost seems as though the cross is worshipped, and its a form of idolatry. Can someone explain this to me??
i can explain how i feel, khan...the cross is not something to be worshipped..it is merely a symbol of what Christ was willing to suffer out of love for me.
What about buddha? They have humungous statues all over Thailand and predominantly Buddhist countries. What the heck happened to us Christians?! Buddha is a nice guy and noone ever seems to complain about or divide about him?! Guess theres a difference between between a God/Deity smiling at you saying, "HA! See what I've done for you, I have a HUGE belly! Rub it, its good luck!" and the other looking down at you saying, "See, what I have done for you?! You BETTER worship me, can't you see I'm suffering up here?"
ba da boom! That was funny. now about the cross ... I mean no offence to the Chatholics out there, but many Christians have understood for a long time that the cross itself can become an idol. Most protestant churches use very simple crosses, and some don't display it prominently at all.
