Manny, Care to elaborate on where your opinion about Tressel and his tolerance for plays like this comes from, besides bitterness from last year's Fiesta Bowl?
Manny- Also I said from the start of the year this year (don't know the name of the thread but pre-season predictions) that I expected OSU to lose 1 game (either NC State at home or Wisconsin). So it's not a shock to me that OSU lost. Yes it sucks to lose, but there is still a good chance there will be one team in New Orleans with one loss (Oklahoma still has some games to go including Big 12 championship game, VT and Miami play so that will take one of them out) so I still expect there to be at least one team with one loss in the Sugar Bowl. OSU just has to keep winning (like #9 Iowa this weekend, top 25 Purdue and Michigan) and we can still get to the BCS (either at large bid or win Big 10), and have a very outside shot of New Orleans.
Well, let's see... There was the throat slashing gesture that Will Allen (I think) made after he tore up McGahee's knee. There was also the same Robert Reynolds twisting Miami players' knees and ankles after tackles, Matt Wilhelm doing the same thing (twisting a knee and ankle) to Kellen Winslow, numerous personal foul penalties this season on Will Smith, and of course, this new low done by Reynolds. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that Youngstown State, Tressel's old school before he came to OSU, is now on probation for violations committed while he was the coach. Notice that Barry Alvarez did not shake Tressel's hand after the game was over. But at least OSU fans are furious about what that scumbag Reynolds did..... And I know that I give Chuckie a hard time about OSU, but I feel that he is an honorable fan. If a Miami guy did this whether it was Vilma, DJ Williams or anyone else, then I would want the guy off the team. You don't intentionally try to end someone's career like that. Reynolds better hope that Sorgi doesn't press criminal charges against him because he could if he wanted to.
Not optimistic. Read this: did any c-town bucks see "Buckeye Replay." Admittedly its a sorry show, but they always have tressel on the morning after so I thought I'd watch. Not only did they completely gloss over the whole incident (just saying that Sorgi was out in the 4th qtr), they actually mentioned Reynolds stats and said he was a key player! I mean, maybe that's not the forum for JT to comment on what Reynolds did, but he'd better address it pretty soon and quit playing dumb. Class?
Manny- YSU had violations (QB had a car, mony from boosters during his 1st championship year) but they were discovered after 4 years so the NCAA couldn't do anything. Also not sure if you know this but the Canes offered Tressel the head coaching job there before they got Butch Davis. He would have taken it but he was going thru a divorce and didn't want to leave at the time. So I'm not sur eif saying Tress is dirty says anything bad about OSU, since Miami wanted him too!
I'm not surprised. I'm sure they want to do all their research (including talking to Reynolds and Hawk who was right there) before they publicly announce anything. They will do the right thing. Andy Geiger (the AD) is a decent guy who will make sure it's handled.
COLUMBUS, Ohio: Ohio State linebacker Robert Reynolds has issued an apology to Wisconsin quarterback Jim Sorgi and to Badger coach Barry Alvarez following Saturday's game in Madison. "I talked to Coach Alvarez and to Jim Sorgi earlier today and apologized for my actions," said Reynolds, a senior from Bowling Green, Kentucky. "I lost my poise and there is no excuse for that. That is certainly not characteristic of Ohio State football. I take full responsibility for my action. As a senior, I have a responsibility to set a better example." "I have had an opportunity to talk with Coach Alvarez and have apologized on behalf of Ohio State and Rob Reynolds," said Ohio State Coach Jim Tressel. "Having spent the past three years with Rob, I truly believe this is an isolated incident and out of character for him. He has apologized to me and is willing to accept the consequences of his behavior."
Haven't announced anything yet but "Willing to accept teh consequences for his actions" kind of implies he'll get something.
Sounds like sleak political job of JT to me. Do they need more time for investigation before handing out the "consequences"? "Having spent the past three years with Rob, I truly believe this is an isolated incident and out of character for him. He has apologized to me and is willing to accept the consequences of his behavior." I bet he won't get anything major punishment IRT suspension/booted, much to the dissapointment of some OSU fans. I don't think an apology is enough for the good image of OSU program for something like this.
Is anyone really surprised by his actions? I'm sure coaches encourage this kind of behavior (maybe not college as much as NFL)... It's football, it's a dog pile. If you don't think this was "light" compared to what usually happens down there, you don't watch much football. He just got unlucky and caught on camera.
If Wisconsin, mainly Barry Alvarez and Jim Sorgi are satisfied, I guess there is nothing else to discuss regarding this incident. However, I will say that if Robert Reynolds played for Miami and Tressel was the coach and he took that same action with him as what Chuckie reported, the media, especially ESPN would be all over Miami about it. Yes, I am aware of Miami's past as I am of Ohio State's; however, people need to realize that reputations can change from good to bad and bad to good.
Apparently OSU wants to run the incident by the Big 10 offices which are closed due to Columbus Day holiday today. It's one of the deals where OSU wants to make sure their punishment is sufficient. Last thing a team wants is to say ok you're suspended 1 game and then the conference step in and say no it's 3. Makes the team look like cheats if they don't police themselves enough. Should get something Official by Mid-Week (I've haven't heard any good rumors but most people say 2 games)
Disappointing- But it's a 1 game suspension per OSU and the Big 10. That is not enough, it should be multiple games or the season.
I wonder how many games he'd have gotten if he'd smashed a beer bottle over Sorgi's head. For some reason, I'm thinking one for that, too.
Throwing a beer bottle, while inexcusable, are not considered dirty. Choking someone under a pile IS DIRTY. Who cares how many games he actually receives suspension (maybe Averaz and Sorgi?), it's the image that will reflect on THE Ohio State University.
They both did. Alvarez said somethign tot he point of "I know Tressel doesn't run a program that teaches that". I still haven't heard anything about Sorgi's condition, but I expect no news is good news.
Really? Why'd the police arrest Marlin Jackson and charge him with a felony over it, then...? Don't those idiots know it's not dirty?
