BEIJING, China (AP) -- A Beijing man has paid $215,000 for the ultimate in lucky cell phone numbers -- 1, followed by a string of 3s.

The phone number was sold this week at an auction in the Chinese capital, newspapers reported Saturday.

Chinese tradition considers 3 a lucky number and groups of 3s even luckier. Though the number 8 is the luckiest, all Chinese cell phone numbers begin with "13," making it impossible to make a number with all 8s.

The reports by the Beijing Times and Beijing Morning Post didn't identify the buyer. Phone calls to the number on Saturday weren't answered.

Hotels, restaurants and other businesses in China regularly try to obtain phone numbers with groups of 8s. Those that can't wind up settling for groups of other numbers.

Sounds crazy but is true with Asians here too always looking for 8's in their #

Gotta love it... now the entire planet has the guy's cell phone number. I'm sure he'll be getting calls non-stop now rendering the phone a PITA or useless. Now how lucky is that?! :D

It sounds funny but it's true. Our current house has two 8's in its address, and yes that was a consideration when buying it. Though I don't know much about 3's but I know we try to get 8 in one of our numbers as much as possible.

For Real. Obviously this guy is rich and/or famous. How long until he gets fed up with people calling up and asking about a "business proposition", or kids just pranking him.

All he needs now is to have someone write a song titled: Jenny 1-333-3333.

Screw that maybe they are right. I'm gonna start dropping 8's all over the place.
