The 2025 Oscar nominations have just been announced this morning by hosts Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang. “Emilia Perez” led the pack with thirteen, followed by “The Brutalist” and “Wicked” with ten nominations each, then “Conclave” with nine, “A Complete Unknown” scored eight, “Anora” and “Emilia Perez” landed six, and “Dune: Part Two” and “The Substance” snagged five each. Snub-wise Denzel Washington missed out for “Gladiator 2” which also only got one nomination for its costumes, no love for Denis Villeneuve in directing or writing “Dune: Part Two, and films like “Challengers,” “Hard Truths” and “Babygirl” were shut out entirely. Welcome surprises for the 2025 Oscar nominations included Coralie Fargaet landing a director nom for “The Substance”; while “The Apprentice,” “Flow” and “I’m Still Here” fared stronger than expected. Still haven't seen but want to: The Brutalist The Wild Robot Nosferatu A Real Pain A Complete Unknown The Substance
Can skip Nosferatu, sadly. Must see A Complete Unknown. IMHO. I don't think I have enough seriousness left in my old bones to watch the Brutalist. It broadcasts not even the tiniest bit of humor.
My opinion on these.... The Brutalist - Great cinematography and performances, gets heavy handed with its message. Thankfully it had a 15 min intermission. The Wild Robot - Cross between The Iron Giant and Wall-E, surprisingly emotional, very well done. Nosferatu - Personally loved the visuals and performances, only complaint is they don't bring much new to the story. A Real Pain - Excellent script and performances, Eisenberg and Culkin work off each really well. A Complete Unknown - Solid across the board, strong performances and musical numbers. Mostly avoids music biopic cliches but it keeps you at a distance from the main character. The Substance - Over the top in all the best way especially for people who enjoyed old school Cronenberg. Also, gets a bit heavy handed in its messaging but still a lot of gory fun....
Oscars? So boomer . Where’s the 'Best 3AM Confession,' 'Most Fire Thirst Trap,' or 'Certified CapCut Edit' award? Ain’t nobody watching movies when the FYP is giving cinematic masterpiece daily . Imagine the speech: 'This W is for everyone who commented ‘bro cooked fr.’ ✨ #BoomerAwardsAreOver #TikTokReign #BigWOnly
I thought Emilia Perez and Conclave were both great. I won’t watch the Brutalist, I automatically disqualify any movie over 3 hours. If you have to be that self indulgent, have a separate category. As for snubs, I thought Denzel was terrible in Gladiator II and correctly not nominated
Oddly, two of the animated features, Flow and The Wild Robot, were my two favorite movies from all of the nominees.
I think Mikey Madison for ‘Anora’ should win Best Actress bc she got snubbed previously for the best death scene in cinematic history …
Accent enhancement. "The Brutalist’ Editor Says Filmmakers Used AI Tools To Enhance Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones’ Hungarian Dialogue." ( Deadline )
Sonic 3 should’ve been nominated and Gladiator 2 deserves way more love, but it’s all good. Lots of politics involved, meaningless charade.
