An observation I made. What do you use more? "Two thousand fifteen" or "twenty fifteen"? I've even started to hear some people retro-actively call the 00s as "twenty oh-four" or "twenty oh-seven", don't think I ever heard anyone say that during that decade. For the old timers on CF was this transitional verbiage like this in the 1900s and 1910s as well?
Twenty fifteen. For the last decade, I refer to it as '04, '05 or '06, etc aka the good old days when we could have won state.
When Jesus established the USA 2015 years ago the proper pronunciation was made well known: Two oh won 5.
Captain's log, Stardate twenty fifteen. That's how Kirk would say it. good question. I have been saying two thousand, since the turn of the century. I doubt anyone said twenty oh one, twenty oh two, twenty oh three in the past decade, so everyone got used to using thousand for the first time in their life. (Nobody said thousand last millennium.) So using thousand is special to the Twenty naught decade, and is flowing over into this decade. But will soon be back to dropping the thousand for every decade and every new millennium, as always, until Thirty. I'm going to guess most start saying twenty twenty for 2020. But who knows, maybe we say two thousand for the entire millennium and drop it only at 2100
i never even though about this, but i said two thousand for 2000-2009 then when 2010 came it did not sound right to me so i switched to twenties. its quicker to say twenty than two thousand.
I think there is a certain internal pronounciation guide that people use. Starting in 2020 I think it will become more common to say twenty twenty than two thousand twenty.
I do think that there will be a point where "twenty _____" is universal, and 2020 might be that point. We might be in the "transitional" years right now.
I think we should just say 15. Why add the 20 or the 2000 to it? It's slang, we don't have to be technical.
Well, just for consistency's sake, I try to stick with "twenty-" because I can't imagine anyone wanting to pronounce the year "two thousand, one hundred seventy-nine" down the road.
I think it's more fun to refer to any year between 2001-2009 as "Ought X". (i.e. - "back in ought 4, Michael Phelps stole the show at the Olympics. You youngins wanna see a real champion, he was a real humdinger")
