If he plays good or bad it doesn't matter, the league is better when stars and in particular Kobe is playing period
I know, I like the league with him in it. I just wanna have a watch thread cause it gets lost in the game thread and it'll be fun taking a look at him this year to see what he can do. Surprisingly, he hasn't been chucking away.
I actually like the new kobe. He's passing and not being selfish, better late than never. And pau Gasol really sucks.
Man. If only Kobe was a midget growing up he'd have the slasher mentality like Ray Allen. Kobe needs to take a lesson from Bruce and be like flowing water. Cut even if you might not get the ball. Swing the ball even if you only get a hockey assist. That's the way to be successful in this system. I do believe this will happen though. Kobe's a smart dude, he'll figure out one way or another to have a solid role. Right now the problem with the Lakers is the stagnant defence. Having to integrate Kobe and not having farmar really hurts them in that respect.
Kobe has never learned how to balance his game. He'll either shoot it everytime or pass it everytime. He is horribly turnover prone thoigh so making him a full time passer is just awful strategy. As usual, the Lakers are just so much better off without him.
You can rationalize all you want, but the fact is that when Kobe doesn't play, the Lakers perform just as well or better than when he does, which isn't the case of any of the all time greats he's so often compared to. Makes it hard to justify devoting so much of the cap to his albatross contract, and that doesn't only refer to the next two years. As far as flopping (which has nothing to do with this topic but i'll happily indulge in your obsession with me and/or the Clippers), if you want to show me the 25+ flops CP3 allegedly has this year (over one a game), be my guest. His "flops" are few and far between and have almost no impact on the game, as opposed to the garbage flailing Harden uses generate half his offense.
same problem steve francis had. when they go into "distributor" mode, they essentially avoid all shots, even easy ones, just to set people up. guys like lebron and wade have always had that balance and just seemed to make the natural play and not the predetemined "aggressive" vs "distributor" mode play. and while kobe does have 5 titles, it's hard to argue with clippy's contention that the lakers don't fall off much without kobe. during the shaq years they would win as much if not more when he was out and shaq played. we never got to see what would happen in the playoffs with kobe out an extended period of time. and i know there was one somewhat recent year (2009-2010?) where the lakers went something like 6-3 with kobe out, including some wins over good teams. the year rudy t was coaching the lakers, rudy t went 24-19 (always funny how people acted like he did so poorly when phil came in and barely surpassed .500 until bynum blew up and pau came along) and when kobe missed 8 games, they went 4-4, with a lineup that was supposedly terrible without kobe. and now they've gone from 10-9 to 0-3 with him coming back. maybe they're just adjusting, but it's not great so far.
Injuries and old age always get the best of them no matter how big their names are. 2 championships without Shaq that is.
I think what Kobe is doing is commendable. He realises that at this point he needs to learn to play within a system. The turnover's will happen, and quite frankly he reminds me of Jeremy Lin. If you're going to ask the question: Right now, does Kobe playing point cost the Lakers a few games? I say yes, because he's not contributing enough to make a positive difference at the cost of disrupting MDA's rhythm. Some people on this board, however, are delusional enough to ask the question: Does Kobe cost the Lakers deep playoff runs and championships? Well, the answer a definitive HELL NO. P.S. And if you want to argue why he has five championships, I only say this. Successful people in this world aren't lucky, they create the circumstances that give them "luck". People who accuse Kobe of being lucky should stop hating and read some Brian Tracy.
But, with the exception of when he demanded to be traded from Charlotte upon being drafted, Kobe didn't create those circumstances - Lakers management did. To the contrary, Kobe ran Shaq out of town when Shaq was still capable of helping him win more championships. It's possible he'd have six or seven trophies had he not needed the spot light all to himself.
I just watched the game, he looks better then some point guards in that he is pushing the pace and getting heaps of open looks for teammates, most of them are been missed but Kobe is playing better if this is what he sees as his role
