I vaguely remember seeing the previews for A Serious Man, and honestly haven't heard a peep about it since. And it's a Coen Bros movie. Where have I been? Has anyone seen this?

I'd rank the best picture nonminations like:
    1.) District 9
    2.) Up in the Air
    3.) Inglourious Basterds
    4.) Up
    5.) Avatar
    6.) The Hurt Locker

    Haven't seen:
    The Blind Side
    An Education
    Precious
    A Serious Man

I can't remember the last time I was so out of touch with any of these films or performances. The only film I've seen on the list is "District 9". I have no idea about any of the rest. IMO, I bet "Avatar" and James Cameron both win for best picture and best director respectfully. I also guess Sandra Bullock wins for "The Blind Side"...given all the talk about it. Those are my hunches.

But, I can't relate to the list so I probably won't watch this year. Who is hosting...Doogie Howser?

I'm actually impressed they nominated District 9 and the Hurt Locker...but I'm sure it's only because they expanded it to 10 nominations.

    Yep, NPH is hosting.

Hurt Locker was a for sure under normal circumstances. District 9 not so much.

Well, since there weren't any big historical dramas this year I guess you're right. Any other year I'd be surprised if the Hurt Locker was nominated over the typical movies the Academy loves like Atonement, The Reader, English Patient, The Queen, etc.

Seriously, there's not a single historical drama/epic/biopic out of ten nominations. I wonder if that's a first.

I'm shocked that District 9 is nominated for Best Picture, and that so many people seem to like it. I watched it for the first time a couple weeks ago and thought it was at best a 5/10.

I'm surprised Hurt Locker was nominated as well, it was good but nothing special.

I haven't seen Crazy Heart with Jeff Bridges yet, but I've heard from several people that it is really, really good. Guess I'll have to see that this weekend.

Same here. I've seen District 9 and Up. Some of these movies I've never even heard of.

I hope Christoph Waltz takes Best Supporting Actor for Inglourious Basterds. Dude was the best villain I've seen in a decade.

Up in the Air was a far better movie than Avatar or The Hurt Locker, but it will probably get mostly shutout except for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Glad to see Food Inc make the nominees for Best Documentary.

why are there like 10 best picture nominations? did I miss something here or was the field just doubled?

isnt that kind of watering down the significance of getting a nomination now?

It was announced early last year that there would be ten nominations. I'm pretty sure the only reason for it is that now there will be 10 movies that can reap the financial benefits of being a best picture nominee instead of only five.

That was a good movie, but I've never seen most of these nominated movies, so I can't really compare.

I understand why they went to 10 films. They have room to put some popular pictures that people actually watched into the running for best picture. That should increase the ratings for the show. I've seen 4 of the best picture noms and will see 6 before the Oscars, that's a huge difference from the 5 years past when I didn't see any of the nominees.
