NBA_Rumors_NewsThe NBA announced the tax level for the 2009-10 season has been set at $69.92 million, over 1.5 mil less than anticipated Not good for alot of teams including the Rox!
Either the Grizz or the Thunder. And additionally Barry could be sent packing the same way with enough cash to cover his whole contract. Moral of the story, the Rox aren't paying the tax unless they make a big move.
No worries, I try to post them but when I get a twitter alert I want to get the info out asap and post the link as soon as I can!
Teams over: Boston Cleveland (if they sign Varejao) Dallas Denver (if they sign birdman) Houston (not too much over, depends on how much the 2 rookies get) Lakers (significantly over if they sign Odom) Miami (barely) New Orleans New York (barely right now, depends if they use MLE / resign Lee) San Antonio Utah Washington So that's 12 teams over the tax if the signings being reported all happen. The highest taxed team should be LAL if they resign Odom. The only good team that's not paying tax is the Orlando, although they might have another signing coming up. Houston, Miami, New Orleans can wiggle out of the tax with a trade or a salary dump in NO's case. NY can avoid the tax too but they don't seem to care much. Overall, I'd say salary matches well with talent in most cases, GMs in the NBA are really smartening up and using their cap wisely. P.S. It's good to be a cheap owner now, that's lots of tax money coming up.
I don't know, signings haven't finished and a few teams can get out of the tax. I'm going to estimate between 40 and 60 million.
Another source: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bk/bkn/6518529.html NBA salary cap drops to $57.7 million for ‘09-10 NEW YORK — The NBA salary cap has been set for next season at $57.7 million, a decline from 2008-09, allowing teams to begin signing players. The figure the league announced Tuesday night was about $1 million less than last season’s cap of $58.68 million, even though league-wide revenue rose 2.5 percent. The number is expected to drop further next season when the full effect of the economic difficulties hit. The new salary cap went into effect at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, ending the NBA’s moratorium period and allowing free agents to sign deals with teams. The luxury tax level also dropped to $69.92 million. Any team whose salary exceeds that will have to pay $1 for every $1 it goes over.
Naw, it's actually a lot less than previous years. A couple teams that used to be deep into the Luxury tax like the Knicks and Mavs had a bunch of salary come off the books.
I wonder if this will effect the chances of a sign and trade in the Ariza/Artest swamp? Dont think the Lakers want to pay to much of the luxury tax and if there going to be over when or if they sign Odom then a sign and trade might help them out more then before.
The tax isn't paid until the end of the season, right? If so, teams could keep their current line-up until midseason for a trade.
You're right: Memphis, Detroit, the Clips, Minnesota, New Jersey, OKC, Portland, and Sacramento. Detroit will probably go above the cap, Jersey is close, Portland is trying to go above. Assuming those 3 are gone, that leaves 5 teams to split the money. This brings up an interesting point: I wonder what the thought process behind the David Lee situation is. When Memphis thought about offering him big money, were they secretly praying NY matches? You know these guys are praying Portland offers Lee 10 mil per, if NY matches that's more tax money for them to split, if they decline Portland might be over the cap.
NOH is over the tax without even having quality players; what a sad situation that they are in. Fakers will be in lux tax hell if they resign Odom.
Finally the NBA has figured out a way to control the salaries. Pure genius by the NBA. Morey is a master at getting talent that isn't a bunch of premadonas; but play with some serious heart. If the Rockets compete next season, that will be awsome to watch. But does anyone know if the Rockets have to Max players out for the whole season, does it still count against the luxury tax?
what happens if you are over the salary cup but under the luxury tax? Is their an incentive to be under the salary cup rather then over? Thanks
