For the very first time in Chinese sports history, in honoring his achievement in NBA and as the official image spokesperson for Beijing 2008 Olympics, the National Mint of China has launched today (October 23) in Beijing the sales of a set of Yao Ming-related commemorative medals, in the form of gold, silver and bronze coins. There will only be 3000 of gold, 10,000 of silver and 4,000 of bronze coins available for sales.

I wish I can lay my hands on a full set of such coins.

be careful putting these things in your mouth, they probably contain dangerously high levels of lead.

Don't worry. This time the coins are not made according to requirements set by a US company.

And rest assured that the design is also not by a US company, not like the case whereby a US-designed China-built-to-spec toy had design flaws that could be dangerous to kids.

It's a funny way of saying Jesus. I think Homer Simpson first said it.

relax, mr. sensitive, nobody's blaming anybody for anything here. I'm sure the U.S. specs for the toys included the instructions "use paint with very high levels of lead", or, at the very least, didn't explicitly say NOT to use paint with very high levels of lead.

Maybe I should have said they probably have dangerously high levels of melamine instead?

wow okay lets start talking about medals instead of trying to move this into the debate section..

I personally thing they look sweet, but they should make more of them. I wonder how much one of those are worth? must be in the 100 thousands...

Relax, we're just kidding around here. No need to take it so seriously (right zhaozhilong?).

As for the value of the medals, I think you may be overestimating just a bit, especially given that multiple people in this thread seem to be trying to order them. Although I guess I can't be certain what currency you're thinking of. $100,000 seems absolutely insane to me, I guess 100,000 yuan is less insane, but still seems really high (~$13,000 or so, right?). They seem pretty franklin-minty to me.

Are they supposed to be made entirely of the indicated metal (i.e. not plated)? From the picture, it seems like the gold are significantly smaller than the silver, which are significantly smaller than the bronze, so I guess that might fit.

Personally, I like the bronze one the most- I think the color picture of Yao on the gold and silver ones looks a bit cheesy. It looks like a sticker.
