Thought we could use a thread for NFL combine info. A lot of interesting results coming out. Some highlights: RBs: Adrian Peterson: 38.5' Vertical, 4.38 Forty Marshawn Lynch: 4.46 Forty Darius Walker: 4.57 Forty WRs: Calvin Johnson: 4.35 Forty Robert Meachem: 4.39 Forty Dwayne Jarrett: Didn't run Forty, was timed in the 4.7's pre-combine OL: Joe Thomas: 4.96 Forty, 28 Bench Press Reps Levi Brown: 5.39 Forty, 31 Bench Press Reps Justin Blalock: 5.23 Forty, 40nch Press Reps Calving Johnson's 4.35 Forty is just amazing. 6'5" 239lbs. w/ 4.3 speed? AP showed good speed and athleticism, it's starting to seem that he may not be there at #8. Never had any interest in Walker but 4.57 Forty for a guy who is maybe 200lbs. isn't good. Many have projected that Levi Brown could be our pick at #8, don't think he put up good enough speed numbers to go along w/ a decent bench press.
I see alot of the Mock Drafts now having either Cleveland passing on APeterson and we taking him or Cleveland taking APeterson and we taking ..... BRADY QUINN
prediction : browns take AP...with Thomas off the board, the Texans will NOT take Brown or Quinn, but will trade the pick down to the 15-28 range for a SS/CB(nelson/merriwether) or OT (stanley/blalock) + a 2nd or 3rd pick...then in 2nd round take KOLB... sign Plummer as FA and use Kolb to groom for a year or two....in the 3rd round take the best remaining RB, possibly Bush (this guy reminds me of Erl CAmbell for some reason)...or Irons
Lynch is the best RB in the draft, and I hope we trade down and grab him if we insist of going RB in the 1st round.. Peterson is kind of on the tall side and runs straight up and down, which leads to a lot of big hits and inuries. his running style is very similar to Chris Brown's, which should be a red flag right away.
I think that analysis of AP is overly critical. Larry Johnson also runs straight up and down. Marcus Allen did as well. I think the problem with alot of scouts is, they try to find something wrong with top 10 prospects. Passing on AP if he is available would be absolutely tragic. The guy is a proven baller. With now PROVEN speed that I never knew he had.
This bit of analysis has been proven wrong time and time again. Eddie George was probably the best example of it being flat out wrong. Larry Johnson does the same and he's probably close to being the next 2,000 yd rb in the NFL. The Texans are going to have to trade up to get AP. Otherwise, he will be a Cleveland Brown or even a Detroit Lion. Don't be suprised if the Lions take him. Kevin Jones is a good back, but he's been hurt much of the last 2 seasons. It's not one of their needs, but since when has Matt Millen drafted based on need?
Like Emmitt Smith? If the Texans take a running back later in the draft (which they should), they should look hard at production and maybe give a glance to measurables.
u cant deny that he's been hurt alot in college. i like him, bu i'm scared of a big guy that runs high like chris brown
I meant that running a 4.57 in the combine isn't good, usually guys that are smaller need to make it up w/ fast 40s. McShay on ESPN lastnight said that Walker is in danger of falling out of the first day.
Couple problems: 1. Neither Nelson or Merriweather are SSs or CBs, both play FS. I wouldn't mind Nelson, but Merriweather isn't even projected to go in the 2nd round, let alone the 1st. Would like to stay as far away from that punk as possible. 2. Blalock is going to the NFL to play OG and Staley would be a huge reach if we are picking mid-way through the first round. 3. Also...Bush and Irons won't be available in the 3rd, but if they are, I would pick them up in a second. I like the idea of trading down if AP isn't there. Trade down and pick up Okoye, pick up Micheal Griffin or Staley in the 2nd, and I'm still thinking that Kolb could fall into the 3rd, pick him up or a RB like Pittman.
Which of his injuries had anything to do with his running style? The ankle problem his soph. year you could maybe say it could have had a slight contribution. Or you could say he sprianed his ankle and kept playing on it to a point that it just got worse. What about his junior year? Perfectly healthy until a (probably unneccessary) dive into the endzone caused a broken collarbone. In other words, his running style, while not perfectly ideal, had very little if not nothing to do with the injuries he had in college.
Of course. My point is that he has not been injured due to his running style. I, for one, would be willing to take a chance that he's going to be pretty damn good in the NFL. With his size, speed, and ability, he can make up for any minor flaws in his style. Even still, he could be coached to get lower. For all we know, OU wasn't going to screw with a good thing and decided against messing with it.
