I just thought I would make a comparison between the quality of PG's in 1992 (early 90's)--versus todays PG's 2002. ELITE PG's of 1992 PERIOD (STATS taken from 92-93 season except KJ--taken 91-92 stats cause of injuries in 93) Mark Price 18.2ppg 8.0apg 1.0spg .484FG% .416-3PT% .948FT% (ALL NBA 1st Team in 92-93--was always a 2nd or 3rd ALL NBA team guy in early 90's) Tim Hardaway 21.5ppg 10.6apg 1.75spg .447FG% (ALL NBA Third Team--early 90's was always 2nd or 3rd ALL NBA team PG) Kevin Johnson 19.7ppg 10.7apg 1.48spg .479FG% (Usually ALL NBA 2nd or 3rd team--had two straight seasons of 20-10 stats and usually shot close to 50% each season) John Stockton 15.1ppg 12.0apg 2.4spg .486FG% .385-3PT% (Almost always 1st or 2nd team all NBA, usually played 82 game seasons, pretty much the best PG in 90's) Terry Porter 18.2ppg 5.2apg 3.9rpg .454FG% .414-3PT% (Usually was an All Star or borderline but never reached ALL NBA 1st team but was usually a top 5-6 PG in early 90's--very and efficient) Isiah Thomas 17.6ppg 8.5apg 1.51spg .446FG% (Was on the decline soon after this season--but was still a top 5PG--former 1st and 2nd ALL NBA player each year) Today's PG's Jason Kidd 14.7ppg 9.9apg 7.2rpg (ALL NBA in D past 4 years, ALL NBA past four seasons) Gary Payton 22.1ppg 9.0apg 4.8rpg 1.6spg(Pretty much similiar awards to Kidd but different seasons and second NBA behind him) Steve Nash 17.7ppg 7.7apg 3.1rpg .455-3ptFG% .483FG% (First Time ALL STAR) Steve Francis 21.6ppg 7.0rpg 6.4apg .417FG% .324 1.25SPG nearly 3.88TOpg Andre Miller 16.5ppg 10.9apg 4.7rpg Mike Bibby 13.7ppg 5.0apg in 33mpg (STATS should be better this season if hes healthy come December) Baron Davis 18.1ppg 8.5apg 4.3apg (1st team ALL STAR--should get better) of course there are guys like Sam Cassell and a few other solid Pg's--but you get the idea.. So which group of PG's are better and why? There seems to be more solid PG's today--but which group of ELITE is better than the other and why?
Can you explain to me why you didn't include Marbury over Francis and/or Davis? imo, the answer to that question is the answer to your title question. If the potential of Francis/Davis turn them into more than stat machines like Marbury, then I'd say this group. Otherwise, the 1992-1993 group is better, which by the way, should include Gary Payton, as well. 1992-93 should also include Mookie Blaylock. The PGs 10 yrs ago played way better defense as a group, and that era indisputably included 2 of the top 5 PGs of all time....Isiah and Stockton.
I'm not sure about as a whole... seems like a toss-up. But the best of the bunch is Stockton easily, especially since Isiah was in the twighlight of his career.
