If you could do the draft over, would you take #1? carr harrington portis shockey . Alot of texans fans dont know this, but when carr was coming out,his critics were showing how he couldnt wave off his receivers and change a play if the play was busted. Basically he only threw to one reciever from the get go,and if that reciever was covered, carr would screw up. He also threw side arm. Which is always a BIG risk when drafting a qb. I think in 4 years everyone will realize he wasnt the best player from 2002. He doesnt throw side arm anymore, but still has alot of trouble moving his eyes to a open reciever if the called play is busted. Oh,and another thing, how much would you give,$$$, to have Portis instead of Pitts or Gaffney. The reason I ask is because I was screaming at my Tv that day when they passed up Portis to get Gaffney. I even went so far to post on a nfl bbs live during the draft telling texans fans they made a huge mistake. And of course,I got alot of flames by people with higher posts counts telling me I dont know squat. I think about those flames everytime dumb Mack runs straight forward into a tackle without moving to the open hole. I still would have taken Carr #1,but Portis was #2 on my list. To bad too sad Texan fans. To bad I dont work for the org.
How good would Portis look behind the Texans O-line last year? With players like that, their performance is greatly effected by those around them. Portis had a good O-line and a coach that knows how to use RBs. Carr had a piss poor O-line and no good receivers. Portis probably still would have been a better choice than Pitts or Gaffney, but that remains to be seen. Especially since Gaffney has looked MUCH better this season than last, and Pitts seems to have the potential to be a solid LT.
If we ran a 4-3 defense I would have to go with Peppers but since we don't I think the Texans made the right choice. We could have gotten portis in the second round but took Chester Pitts. Yikes!!
Yes, if we had to do it over, we would have taken Portis. Then again, someone would take him within the first 5 picks.
I think we took Chester Pitts thinking that Tony Bosselli was going to play later in the season, I think.
I don't think we could have got Portis at the Pitts pick. We would have had to use our first 2nd round pick which was Gaffney.
Portis was taken in the second round with the 51st pick overall. We had taken Carr - Pick #1 Gaffney - Pick #33 Pitts - Pick #50 instead of him.
i'd like you to post an example of when he's done this. the knock on portis was his durability, and less than a year and a half into his career, i can see why. i don't think he'll ever be able to do what ricky williams did last week -- carry 42 times and dominate a game. hell, he's never carried the ball 30 times in any game. i think he'll struggle to stay healthy, wearing down quickly. meanwhile, pitts is going to start on the texans' line for the next decade. the job he did on jason taylor in week 1 was nothing short of extraordinary. as he gains experience, that will become more and more commonplace. gaffney's not a game-breaker, but he's shaping up to be a great #2 receiver - makes tough catches, runs well after the catch. thing with both him and pitts: they're still inexperienced. this would've been gaffney's senior year and it's pitts' sixth in organized football. they both have the potential to register long, productive careers. look, 32 teams passed on portis - it happens every year. priest holmes went undrafted. if pitts and gaffney continue on their current path, the texans will have landed two good ones. no sense in playing what if.
Portis is nothing more than a product of Denver's system. He's about the fourth running back in five years to run for a 1000 yards for the Broncos. Carr was the right pick.
Yeah I am sure your just a football guru, the Texans are doing just fine with out you on there payroll... lets go back to when Terrell Davis was drafted and ask the same questions.... there were over 200 players taken above him.... You dont have a crystal ball and neither does Charley or Dom.... ID take Carr over Joey still... you build a franchise around a QB... Harringtons numbers are close to Carrs...but Carr went to a EXPANSION team.... if people knew Portis would be what he is today he would have been a top 3 pick.... I wouldnt second guess any of there picks so far.... its easy to look back and say WOW such and such was picked here and look at all these guys picked before him.... I am not 100% sold on shockey-- he has started slow thus far...really dont know how high you take a TE... so to answer your question I think they did just fine.... there are alot of teams that wish they had not passed on Portis, you arnt casting any light there....
