The Rockets still owe their 2002 first round pick to the Griz unless they win the #1 overall pick. What other picks does Houston have for the coming draft? Does anybody still owe us a #1 for the coming year? Just an idle question until the Rockets heal. I posted this in the wrong forum the first time, so forgive me if you're seeing this twice.

This is not correct. Last draft was the last for general lottery protection.

My fault the pick is not lottery protected. The Rockets had the option LAST SEASON of giving the Grizz the #13 or #18 pick which the Grizz would have sent to Detroit to complete the Otis Thorpe trade. However, the Rockets(thinking they would be a playoff team) made a deal with Detroit to keep the pick.
This season that pick is not optional or protected and will be conveyed to the Grizzlies regardless of Houston's draft position. The Grizzlies pick is top 5 protected against Detroit.

Can any other folks confirm if this the understanding from Rockets personnel as well. If true this sucks, and make me more inclined to consider trades with immediate benifit.

I believe MemphisX is indeed talking out of his a$$. Their pick this year is headed to Detroit if it's not top 5 allright but our pick is lotto protected in 2002 luckily for us. nbadraftnet is right on that one I'm 99% sure. So go Grizz win all you can I hope you end up screwed outta any picks this year and we get Ming.

The Rockets never made a deal with Detroit. Detroit made a deal with Orlando to prevent them from sending the pick in time to Houston. Since Orlando waited in sending the pick to Houston, it was too late for Houston to send the pick to Vancouver, who could no longer send the pick to Detroit.

Everything I've read suggests the rocket's pick is lotto protected and may even be top 15 protected. Vancouver is screwed.

I think Joe Joe is right.

I remember that there were a lot of 'experts' who made light of the fact that the Grizz are hosting the draft and, because their pick is only Top 5 protected from the Pistons (how idiotic!), may not have a 1st round pick.

So why would people have this opinion if the Grizz were guaranteed the Rocks' pick regardless of position?
