Can anyone post details on the draft picks we'll have this summer? (Especially someone who for sure knows the facts...) Obviously, we need another piece to our rebuilding effort. * Do we have to give our pick to the Grizzlies this summer, unless it's top 3? Any possibilities of pushing it off another year? * What are the conditions of the first and second round picks we obtained from Toronto in the Dream trade? Is this Toronto's pick this year, lottery protected, or can they give us someone else's pick? * How long does Chicago have to give us the first round pick, and when does it become the 2 second round picks from the Drew trade? * Did we get any picks from the Rice/Anderson trade? I remember them talking about is getting a 2nd rounder, or something, when Les held out, or did we just get some cash? I'm thrilled we got Morris for Detroit's #1 pick from the Turcan trade. great move. We wouldn't have seen that for another few years.
I can't guarantee everything 100%, but this is my understanding from everything I've posted on ClutchCity.net: 1) http://www.clutchcity.net/news.cfm?NewsID=490 From a Vanouver Sun article last season, if the Rockets did not make the playoffs in 2001 (which obviously they didn't), "they have the option of conveying a top 15 pick to Vancouver in 2002 or 2003." 2) http://www.clutchcity.net/news.cfm?NewsID=760 I don't know on the second round pick, but the first round pick is lottery-protected and is the Raptors' pick, so I assume it will end up being their pick this season. 3) http://www.clutchcity.net/news.cfm?NewsID=488 The Rockets are owed a first round pick from Chicago if it is not in the top 20 in 2001 (which obviously it wasn't), not in the top 19 in 2002 or not in the top 18 in 2003. The Bulls, the worst team in the league, would have to get pretty damn good pretty fast, which is unlikely. If none of the conditions are met, the Rockets receive 2 second rounders. 4) http://www.clutchcity.net/news.cfm?NewsID=785 I remember the Rockets got cash... can't remember if they got conditional second-rounders as well or not.
why do we have to give away our pick to memphis? So if we become a lottery team and get a good pick, we have to give it to memphis? Im kinda slow, youll have to fill me in. This would really set our team back if we had to give up a great lottery pick. Is it for the francis trade from a few years back?
Yes, the pick we owe the Grizzlies, is from the Francis trade. Thanks Clutch!!! Great Info... So, that means that this summer, the Rockets will probably have: 1: Our 1st and 2nd round picks 2: Toronto's 1st round pick and possibly: Toronto's 2nd round pick NY's 2nd round pick depending on Rice results? and maybe, if we hold up a Chicago trade of some type, Chicago could deal us a pick of some kind. But the following summer in 2003, we will have to find a way to provide the Grizzlies with a Top 15 pick. Does anyone else know confirmed details on the Toronto and NY possible 2nd round picks?
the 2nd round pick from the Raptors, is from Detroit, for this year. the 1st round pick is Toronto's own, lottery protected and with no way for the Rockets to claim it for the next 7 years, its up to Toronto when they want to give it up. It will really depend on if they need any help and who they expect in the draft order.
The more I think about the Memphis pick, the more I think it means top 15 pick in 2002, or (a pick in) 2003. This is basically a safeguard of us sucking terribly, with no hope for improvement, and being able to give up a pick earlier. There's no way the conditions can specify it being a top 15 pick in 2003, because there's no guarantee of that being available. the deal with Rice was future considerations from NY/Dallas, and I think had some plan in place based on something to determine if the Rockets got more compensation (if it's based on our performance, or Rice's, we'll definitely be getting that something). Not sure, it may have just been the money. Sherlock-We will not have our own 2nd rounder, we gave that up in the Willis trade (unless maybe we gave them the Detroit 2nd rounder via Toronto?).
I seem to remember that the Grizzlie pick we owe was top 15 protected in 2002, and with no protection in 2003, but I'm not sure of that. I also thought I had read earlier that the Toronto 1st pick WAS ours to choose, although lottery protected, therefore meaning we'd probably get it this year. Looogie, how did you come about information that it was Toronto's choice when to convey the pick? I was hoping this thread would establish definity about our picks...
Does this mean that we have to give up a lottery pick this season to Memphis if we are in fact in the lottery?
Means at the end of this year, or the year after that. So this year I am guessing if we SUCK hard we will keep our pick.
I thought not, but I'm getting a bit confused...Clutch, please tell it do us like 4th graders, that we don't "have" to give the pick up if it's a good one....and it looks like we might have a chance for a #1 pick or something...(don't know if its good or bad, really...)
Man you are slow! Stop hanging aroung guns before you hurt yourself! We DO NOT have to give up our top pick to Vancouver this year. If we end up with the #1 pick this year, we get to KEEP IT! Or #2, #3.....
That was a quote from the Vancouver Sun last year ... though it's pretty good info, we can't say for sure those are the conditions of that pick (I've seen newspaper reporters miss pick conditions before). But this is the EXACT text of the article (which is no longer on the web at the Vancouver Sun) describing the Grizzlies draft situation last season. It was printed on January 9, 2001:
It won't surprise you I'm sure that there were several different stories floating about regarding the pick. I had forgotten the details of this article, but it's at least as credible as any of the other versions, so we might as well hang our hats on it for now. Where's Juan Valdez? He's our resident RealGM expert on this board.
I dont think we owe a first rounder. That would be rather stupid, cause Morris himself was a second rounder. In essence why would the Rockets trade a future first rounder for a present second rounder? Doesnt make sense to me.
Well, regardless of the stupidity of it, that is what we did. Although, as I understood it, we traded a first rounder that was owed to us by someone else, and I don't think it is any of the picks listed here. Didn't Detroit owe us a first rounder? Is that the pick that was sent to Atlanta for Morris? I can't remember for sure.
Yes and no, the rockets traded a future first rounder for Morris. But they're giving up one of the future first rounders that are owed to the rockets, so it's not as imminent a trade.
That would be rather stupid, cause Morris himself was a second rounder. In essence why would the Rockets trade a future first rounder for a present second rounder? Doesnt make sense to me. makes perfect sense...it is like getting a loan...you pay interest on today's investment because of the value added of TMO's game by the time Atlanta receiver our pick...
