I was flipping thru an old NBA Guide and was surprised to see that the Rockets were dead last in home attendance for the 2000/01 season. Houston only averaged 12,648 fans per game in a building that seats 16,285. Even Vancouver, New Jersey, Atlanta, the Clippers, Cleveland, Denver, Golden St., and Washington averaged more than 13K per and none of those teams came anywhere near Houston's 45 wins. What dynamics were at work that year to explain dead last home attendance? Are Rockets fans considered fairweather?
Before the championship days, attendance was poor. Back in '93-'94, there was a playoff game against the Suns that didn't even sell out. Amazing what a couple of rings can do for attendance. I think that '00-'01 was the first year that it really sunk in, I mean really registered, that the Decade of Dreams was over.
Fans in Houston f***ing suck! I hate that about this city. Everyone is so unloyal to the Rockets, it kills me. I'd go to every Rocket game if I had the money, but I don't. The fans in this city, the majority, only support the Rockets when they're winning - not all the time. Even people on this board say the Rockets suck, when that just isn't the case. Least every Texans game sold out last year when they were a less talented expansion team.
Yep, agreed. It used to kill me when the Oiler games didn't sell out. There was a six year stretch of making the playoffs (or something like that), and every week it would be a miracle for the home games to be televised. You just had to hope that Randalls or someone would buy the remaining tickets. It's sad.
It seems pretty simple to me. There are plenty of fans who love watching the games but it's just too expensive for most of them to get tickets. Lower prices equal higher attendance. If the Rockets aren't willing to lower prices high attendance must not be a priority.
going to the games that don't really count since i don't have much money makes me not want to go to the games. Only the rich ass old peopoe can afford to sit down low. , but they don't even care about the games. The crowd is soo unenrgetic it kills me. going to a rockets game is almost lifeless no matter how much I love them. fans in houston suck. my sister could make more noise than the whole stadium combined.
hey hey just relax. It happened with the Oilers and the Astros it's just a cycle...maybe if we had a little something to cheer about it would be all good. If fans are so unloyal why is it sooo hard to get texans tickets? The franchise lost its face when Hakeem bolted for Canada and with that loss came the loss of fans ablility to relate to a bunch of young players in the infancy of their careers. Fans aren't unloyal, they just can't relate. Now their was a time when a certain owner threatened us...and we gladly showed him the door. I think we even helped him pack and averaged like 800 fans a game inside the Astrodome. Thanks for the memories BUD! As for Les...We gave him his new arena what more does he want from us? The fans will return this season shaking the Tundradome to its foundation...so drop the subject.
watch it buddy, houston just a football city, u can't change that, at least not in 10 years, but it doesn't mean any fans in houston sucks.
The Rockets jacked up ticket prices very year after getting the rings, but proceeded to go downhill. We began a senior citzen home, than walked into a shaky rebuilding mode, but the team continued to price fans out. They didn't do anything about it until the last couple of years. Evan
the oilers games always sold out with walkups...they averaged 110% capacity for 8 straight years. they didn't always meet the deadline for blackouts though...so Randall's would pledge to buy the tickets if they weren't bought later...but they were all ultimately bought.
The Astrodome is a bit more difficult to sell out. Considering that there are 42,217 seats (not to mention the boxes).
Funny, most people who complain about us not selling out games don't GO to games. Or at least they don't pay for their own tickets if they do. Maybe their parents pay, but not all of us have that luxury. I can't afford to go to but a few games a year. Does that mean I'm not a Rocket fan or that I "suck"?
Really? Oh, okay, well that's kind of heart-warming, I guess. Although I could swear that a good chunk of the games never made it to TV. Astrodome. Heh. You don't even hear that word anymore, do you? Brings back some good memories. (And plenty of bad ones too. Blast Joe Montana and his Chiefs!) anyways. wrong forum, i know.
True, the Astrodome is larger, but there are far fewer games. The picture's different when you think about it on a tickets per season basis: 60,000 seats (i'm guessing the boxes and stuff) * 8 games = 480,000 tickets 16,000 seats (random guess for the summit) * 41 games = 656,000 tickets. Granted, football tickets are more expensive. But even if the average ticket is 37% higher, that would still work out to be about the same. Will the NBA season start already!!!! Why am I doing this math?!?
I dont post at all due to most of time I come to this site is during work to kill times. But I do have something to say about the attendance. If you do look at the year where attendance drop, that is the year when DOT COM companies crash. And due to fact that Houston had lots of job dealing with IT had hard time and that is the year when economic start to drop little by little. After that year when IT jobs were coming back 911 happened. After the 911 then @#$$ing ENRON. Trust me it was not the fact that people did not support the team it was the econimic problem that happen during pass few years. PS. Have you been to Summit? It sux big time.
Hold on man, I said the MAJORITY. I'm not dissing BBS posters, we are among the most loyal Rockets fans, otherwise we wouldn't be posting on this board in the first place. So, sorry if I offended you, I wasn't sayin you suck, just that *most* the fans in this city are only "what have you done for me lately" fans - that gets on my nerves. If you still think I suck, then f**k you too.
