Long story short: I currently work for a NPO in the IT department through a staffing agency. I've worked here for about 4 months and the job is freaking terrible. I have a new job coming up early next month so I plan on quitting within the next few weeks.

I don't want to burn any bridges with my staffing agency because they've taken care of me and I could possibly utilize them in the future. What I am really wondering is; if I give 2 weeks notice, is it possible/will they fire me on the spot or earlier than those 2 weeks? Should I give less notice such as 1 week?

    Thanks in advance folks!

Give the notice. You never know. Depending on your position, they're not likely to fire you on the spot.

Yes, it's common practice for companies to let you go earlier then 2 weeks, unless they are severely short staffed. They know productivity slips during that 2 weeks.

I would recommend giving 2 weeks notice if you don't want to burn bridges with the agency.

Is it possible that they will let me go in like 1 week if I put in a 2 weeks notice? The reason I ask is, I'm actually taking a pay cut for this new job (very good benefits). In other words, I really need the money (who doesn't these days) so I don't want to lose that week.

Damnit. That is what I expected to hear. I think my situation may be slightly different though; even though it is with a staffing agency there was an interview period during that time. I imagine they would probably replace me in 1 week. That makes me want to give them less notice.

Two weeks is customary, but if you really need the money just give 1, it will all work out.

A good way to gauge is asking around or noticing what they do to the other temps that left around your area or department.

I don't care that much since I want to be out of the IT industry as a whole within the next year or so. At the same time, the staffing agency has made sure that I'm paid very well (especially for what I'm doing here) so I don't want to piss them off. Giving them 1 week will make them pretty upset with me won't it? This is a complete tightrope walk. :(

There aren't any, I'm the only one. Like I said, this isn't really your average temp job; I'm temp-to-hire (I reaaaaally don't want to be hired at this point).

I used to work in the back office of a staffing agency, and I can tell you that it depends on your position. If you are easily replaceable and/or your job involves telephone or deskside support, then you will be cut ASAP. If you are needed for the transition or have a project that needs finishing up, then you will be handled with care.

I do helpdesk support, I answer *all* of the calls. sounds like I should just give them 1 week.

Sounds like you're just looking for someone to tell you to leave early. lol. Two weeks is customary. They'll put your info in a database... that you left early... omg, and then you're screwed for LIFE! :D

You should give them give a resignation notice. You know, like Nationals GM Jim Bowden did last week. Then you can leave ASAP. Boom!

I'm not, but I did do a fair bit of research into this before hand. Also one of the replies in this very thread explicitly stated that in my type of position at his staffing agency I would be let go almost immediately.

So yeah, I'm going to probably give 1 week unless my contract stipulates otherwise. Texas at-will-employment is so freaking unfair. We have to give two weeks but they can drop you if they don't like your shirt that morning.

This entire thread is about how you don't have to give 2 weeks notice. So how'd you go from there to 'We have to give two weeks'?
You can give two weeks if you don't want to burn bridges. They can give two weeks if they don't want to burn bridges.
Either side can tell the other to take a flying leap.

Uh, apparently you're having trouble with your reading comprehension abilities. I don't remember EVER asking if I had to give 2 weeks notice. I already knew that I didn't have to, I've been working for quite awhile. I have never once heard of a company give someone two weeks notice that they were being fired unless they were laid off, which is an entirely different situation.
