I'm looking for my first car and a friend of mine just told me that his sister, who is moving, is looking to sell her 98 grand am. The car has 37k miles on it, is green, and it has a spoiler. He says she is willing to sell it for $7000. I just wanted to know if there are any 98 grand am owners out there or people who know about something about the car and can tell me what they think about it, i.e. performance, styling, reliability. . . Hope somebody can help, thanks.

I have a 99 GrandAm SE with the spoiler and the V6 engine, and I love the car. It's been very reliable ... I've put over 89K miles on it in 4yrs, and with the exception of the regular maintenance, nothing out of the ordinary has caused problems.

The performance is good, for the V6 at least, ~190 HP I think, which is pretty decent. Styling I like too ... when I got it, it seemed pretty new, but now I see GrandAms EVERYWHERE!

Overall, I'd say it's a good car ... reliable, affordable, and pretty fun to drive too ... the whole cockpit feel is excellent. Altho, I think $7K is a bit too pricey, I couldn't sell my 99 for that much, but I also have high milage.

    Oski,

Grand Ams are considered Category II cars per NADA. Ive owned 3 different ones and have had good luck with them.

I am in the automotive appraisal business and to be honest with you, $7,000 is kinda of high for that car. I would pay closer to $6,000-$6,500. You might want to check out www.autotrader.com and see what others are selling for before making an offer.

Here's a link to the Kelly Blue Book values. Just click on the used car values link & fill in the blanks.

Codell - email me sometime, I need to ask you some car selling questions, get some advice... thanks!

Oski, my mother in law had a 1999, she really liked it. She had to have the whole engine replaced though (under warranty). Besides that it ran great, roomy and very peppy also. I had a 1989 model that was small and had a lot of miles, they have really changed for the better. The 2004 model looks sweet.

I've never owned a Grand Am but they are great dependable cars. I drive a 2001 Grand Prix and like the Grand Am, it's one of the most dependable cars around. I've known people who've said they kept their Grand Ams or Grand Prixs for years with little or no problems.
