http://www.cnn.com/2003/SHOWBIZ/Movies/09/11/britain.hollywood.ap/index.html LONDON, England (AP) -- British filmgoers consider 1939 -- the year of "Gone with the Wind," "Wuthering Heights" and "The Wizard of Oz" -- the greatest year in Hollywood history, according to an Internet survey published Thursday. Second place went to 1974, which saw the release of "The Godfather: Part II" starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, which won six Oscars. "Chinatown," "The Conversation" and "Harry and Tonto" also came out that year. "Gone with the Wind," starring Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable, was the most popular film of its day and carried off eight Oscars. Other 1939 classics include the John Wayne western "Stagecoach"; director Frank Capra's "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," starring James Stewart; "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" with Charles Laughton, and "Of Mice and Men" with Burgess Meredith. Other highly rated years were 1946 ("The Big Sleep," "It's a Wonderful Life," "The Postman Always Rings Twice"); 1941 ("Citizen Kane," "How Green Was My Valley"); 1957 ("Zorro," "Bridge on the River Kwai") and 1971 ("The French Connection," "A Clockwork Orange). The survey of 2,000 people was conducted by Internet polling company YouGov, which draws its samples from a larger pool of volunteers. ******************* The poll is on the cnn site. What about 1985? Back To the Future Brazil The Breakfast Club Goonies Enemy Mine Spies Like Us European Vacation Volunteers Real Genius Clue Summer Rental Explorers Silverado Maybe I just saw too many flicks that year...
Goonies? I love that Vietnamese kid who could barely speak English yet all his friends understood exactly what he was saying. Vietnamese kid: blah blah blah blah. Other Goonie: You're right. If they ever come out with a DVD version, they'll have to have subtitles everytime he talks.
Goonies is available on DVD. Personally, I've found 1941 to be a pretty darn good year for film, but maybe that's because several of my favorites were made in 1941 (though one wasn't released until a few years after that). Citizen Kane Arsenic and Old Lace The Maltese Falcon The Lady Eve Meet John Doe Dumbo Suspicion Sullivan's Travels Segeant York Never Give a Sucker an Even Break Here Comes Mr. Jordan Hellzapoppin Shadow of the Thin Man Topper Returns Dr. Jeckell & Mr. Hyde
hey, they forgot Snow White in 1939 also (or does animated not count?). and i had always heard Citizen Kane was from 1939 also. apparently not.
Those are some *dang* good movies. I'm no doubt biased by era, but my favorite film year is 1994. Pulp Fiction Shawshank Redemption Natural Born Killers Forrest Gump Clerks The Lion King Quiz Show Dumb and Dumber (Man, I am one pathetic loser!) Speed Ed Wood Hoop Dreams
Hey what about this year? Matrix Reloaded Matrix Revolutions Finding Nemo X-2 Return of the King! Or is all of that negated due to Freddy vs. Jason's crappiness?
LOL I thought Speed was OK, but included it in my list because it was hugely popular and well-received. Sorry, MacBeth, I didn't like Shallow Grave all that much. Maybe I should rent it again, though...Unless you're talking about Trainspotting (which I loved). That came out in 1995, I believe.
Like I said above, I included it in my list because it was hugely popular and well-received. Believe me -- I'm not a fan! LOL
The goonies dvd is actually pretty funny. They got together for a reunion and taped a full length version with audio commentary. The actor that played Chunk actually ran for class president at Berkeley with a slogan of "Vote For Chunk".
yeah, Shallow Grave. Awesome movie, although I agree that Trainspotting was better, but then again, IMO, Trainspotting might be one of the 10 best films of the last decade. Have you read the book? Oh, and I am surprised you didn't like Shallow Grave, I thought it was excellent. Try it again, maybe it'll grwo an you.
'94 was a great year but I also like 1959 because of "North by Northwest" and "Ben-Hur". Can anyone tell me some other great movies from 1959?
Damn, no love for Speed! One of the best action movies in the past ten years Harry: You shot me, I can't believe it. They're giving you a medal for shooting me, you little prick! Jack: Harry, you TOLD me to!
