I was happy to hear that they have 6 "plans" or alternatives set up for free agency. Of course Bosh is the main prize for us, but as Bosh to Houston is looking more unlikely, it's good to know we have backup plans; our future looks very bright indeed. I'm sure one of the alternatives is David Lee, it would be great to have him here! Plus he isn't receiving much attention with all the buzz about LeBron/Bosh/Wade/JJ, so if we make him feel wanted, it'll be a big step for us!
Here's a few tidbits. On P.Patterson. He was really raw his freshman year, 2nd year added lowpost game, rebounding fantastic (playing 5 spot), last year moved to the 4 really well, can play at the elbow, step out to the 3-point line, and his lowpost game was the most efficient of all college players in draft. Interesting that he didn't consider him a stretch 4, but a normal full-size 4 to defend the basket. Good, but not great J, great back to the basket off, good passer. Said package of slightly less O than Landry, and a little less D than the Chuckwagon(very few as good as Chuck). We have 6 different contingency plans for this offseason/free agency. Said there was no way they thought P-Pat would be there, and was trying to trade up to get him. Names they loked, and thought MIGHT drop to 14 was George, and Henry. Spoiler H: Daryl, we're looking at SportsBook. ... What we're doing is looking at Sportsbook. Just a fun thing to look at. One is, which Houston pro team will win a championship first? Basically Texans and Rockets not that far off. Also have odds on each individually players. Just for your knowledge, Chris Bosh is on here and Rockets are listed at 10/1. Story on Chronicle that you cant comment on or it's tampering I guess. But..how do I say all this? DM: Best show ever! (laughing)I'll just listen! H: Well I dont know what you can talk about and what you cant. ... DM: I cant talk about players in FA, certainly cant talk about wagering on them. H: Stern would parlay your fine ... Did you go into the draft with a strategy based on what you plan do after the draft? DM: No, totally unrelated. Going for the best player and we thought Patrick was that. Our draft picks are something we have for 4 or more years. Rosters change significantly. 2 years ago, the only wing player was Shane and when I got here only PF was Novak. Things change quickly. H: Would you like to see FA be ahead of the draft by a week, 2 weeks, couple of weeks? DM: I think there could be some adjustment of timing though I havent thought through it all. H: Would make for some interesting draft day trades. Draft picks could be used as leverage. DM: Right. It would bring up timing issues. Dont think FA could start earlier because CBA and revenue; know what rules you're playing under. They'd have to move draft to early August if you wanted to do that. H: Looking at your draft pattern with 3 and 4 years guys, does their bigger body of work make it easier to evaluate? How much do those things factor in? DM: We dont do that by design. We did draft a freshman in Donte Greene a few years ago. Just looking for the best player. Guys like Chase; it's for sure being younger coming out of school does more likely lead to a better pro career all things being equal but all things arent equal in terms of pretty talented guys who dont come out for various reasons get lumped in with less talented guys and didnt think that was the case with Patrick and Chase. H: What areas have improved w/ Patrick since freshman yr til he came out? DM: Freshman year he was raw. 2nd year added a low post game and rebounding. Showed he could play 5 at a high level. Jr. year he got pushed over to the 4. Showed he could play 4, the elbow, step out from the 3, back to the basket is most efficient. Each year he added something to his game. H: Daryl Morey joining us. How many contengencies...when you deal on the FA front this year, how many contingencies do you have? Set number? DM: Yeah we have 6 right now. Contingencies zero as we're happy with the team we have. Think we have a playoff team, can push for homecourt advantage. We are trying to do better and we're chasing some of the guys reported. I think that might get us to the favorites for the title, obviously we're not right now. 6 major plans we're targeting to do at this point. H: When you look at your roster, you have a ton of depth, especially in the frontcourt, as I guess that isnt bad because as you said, you had Novak. Seems like something will have to happen DM: We're in a good position in potential S&Ts we're we might have to send out more players than we take back. It's a good situation from that perspective. We're a deep team and Coach Adelman has had deep teams in Sacramento and it should help as the season goes through. H: I saw your tweet, picking up Ishmael Smith for SL team. Talk about that process. DM: Yeah, it's gets a little crazy after the draft. We dont get as crazy as football draft. Gersson Rosas, Sam, BJ, Phil, Gerald Mankins scramble after the draft. Agents wont talk before the draft as they think they're clients are getting picked. Scramble to get committments to come to SL/TC. Very fluid because you cant offer financial inducements, it's just a promise based on opportunity. Promises can move around a bit. Def. got Ishmael. Couple places where we may have roster opportunities is the 3rd PG spot and maybe 3rd big. Focused mostly on those positions and we were maybe able to get best player because of the agent. H: Many we're expecting to manuvere in the 2nd round. DM: Yeah, instead of cash, many were looking for future picks. We were reluctant to do that. No one jumped out where we wanted to do that. H: Blown away at the PP interview. Polished guy, wise beyond his years, which fits in with what you guys like. Does PP give you the guy who could stretch the floor at the 4 spot? DM: I think its the other way. Can shoot the college 3 but not knockdown guy like Novak. Think he got good low post 4, true size 4, can also play from the elbow and can pass out the double teams. H: Chuck Hayes 2.0?(joking) DM: If you combine Carl and Chuck, with less offense than Carl and some defense of Chuck, better defender of Carl, you get Patrick. H: If Les Kevin Pritchard'd you, would you have hung around? DM: Like a car accident or something, not gonna know how you'll react unless you're around it. Amazing. I respect Kevin. Great job in Portland. I dont know what I wouldve done. He probably handled it better than I would have. ... H: As people who follow this in the media and as fans, mock drafts are out there, and on the really detailed sites, it goes sometimes 2 years ahead. As you prepare, how far out does an NBA team go? 2011 board? DM: Yeah, we have boards on '11 and '12. When doing trades, like the Knicks, we take a sense of what those drafts may look like, though, it is very difficult. All we can really map is the 1-and-done. Hard to totally nail it. ... H: Thanks for joining us Daryl. Congrats on getting the guy you wanted. Clearly got the guy you wanted. DM: Yeah, we didnt think Patrick would make it to us. That's why we tried to move up aggressively. H: Who are you referring to? Hint? DM: We liked Paul George and Xavier Henry. We thought one of those would last. Quality bigs like Patrick generally dont make it down to 14. H: Blown away when Hayward went to Jazz? DM: Not totally surprised. H: We took look at Utah fan base and figured he made sense. DM: Indiana was mad. They took best marketing player off the board. H: No way Hayward made past 9 or 10(laughing). DM: They took it off SportsBook. H: It was on there. Utah was favorite, Indy was second favorite. ... H: Daryl, thanks for joining us. Good luck on July 1st. Anything we can do FA wise? DM: Thanks for having me on, gotta go get this call.
Why else do you thing that interview was so intelligent? Also, I wonder what that other call was that Morey had to take?
Plan A: Lebron Plan B: Wade Plan C: Bosh Plan D: Lebron and Bosh Plan E: JJ and Bosh Plan F: JJ something like that
