A collision between a semitruck and an SUV carrying more than two dozen people near the U.S.-Mexico border Tuesday morning has left 15 dead and several others injured, officials said.

Twenty-seven people were in the SUV when it struck a tractor-trailer hauling gravel, said Judy Cruz, the El Centro Regional Medical Center’s emergency department director.

    27 people in an expedition!?!?!?!

I wonder if I could save a few extra cents on my produce if they could fit 50 workers in a single expedition.

    Shocker!

Gregory Bovino, the Border Patrol’s El Centro sector chief, told the Associated Press that surveillance footage taken before the early Tuesday wreck captured a Ford Expedition and Chevrolet Suburban drive through the breached fence.

It’s believed that those involved were part of a migrant smuggling operation.

The Suburban, which carried 19 people, caught fire on an interstate shortly after it entered the country. All those inside escaped and were taken into custody by Border Patrol agents.

The 1997 red Ford Expedition, which was jammed with 25 people, continued traveling before it was T-boned by a semi-truck hauling gravel a short time later, killing 13 inside.

Seats in the 1997 Ford Expedition, designed to hold no more than eight people, had been removed except for those for the driver and front passenger, said Omar Watson, chief of the California Highway Patrol’s border division.

The passengers in the SUV, some of whom were able to pull themselves out of the mangled vehicle, ranged in age from 15 to 53, officials said.

The Mexican government reported that 10 of the dead were identified as its citizens.

The SUV’s driver, who Mexican media said was 22, was from Mexicali, just across the border, and was among those killed.

“Human smugglers have proven time and again they have little regard for human life,” Bovino told the Associated Press. “Those who may be contemplating crossing the border illegally should pause to think of the dangers that all too often end in tragedy, tragedies our Border Patrol Agents and first responders are unfortunately very familiar with.”

So you're telling me that the previous administration started building a new wall before repairing the existing border... top minds working overtime.

To be fair, the intention of the wall was never to keep anyone out of anywhere.

I generally don't post in these 'tragic' threads because there isn't anything to be said that isn't said, and it's sad as hell... but I'll pipe up and say that this is just ****ing horrible. Has nothing to do with politics or laws. 15 people died. RIP.

That’s not funny at all. Imagine how desperate these people were to even be in this situation. Trump did nothing to alleviate this sort of desperation and poverty. At least show sympathy for the only victims of this accident.

Thats kinda my point, bruh. Instead of offering a very generous work visa program to poor immigrants, the right just wants to use them as cheap slave-like labor and the democrats want to use them as political fodder.

Illegal immigrants involved in deadly crash near US-Mexico border paid up to $10K each to be smuggled

The illegal immigrants who were involved in a fatal California highway crash last week reportedly paid up to $10,000 each to be smuggled across the U.S.-Mexico border.

The 25 immigrants were jammed into a single SUV that crashed into a semi-truck in Holtville, a town about 125 miles east of San Diego, near the border.

13 of the passengers were killed. The remaining victims are still being treated for their wounds, but are likely to be deported once they recover – unless they file an asylum claim, according to the Daily Mail which was the first to report on their payments.

The immigrants paid between $5,000 and $10,000 to be smuggled across the border, with Guatemalan immigrants paying the highest fee. Their ages ranged from 15 to 53 and were a mix of males and females, officials said.

The crash marked the first large vehicle breach in the El Centro sector of 2021. Border Patrol figures cited by the Daily Mail show more than 13,700 people attempted to illegally cross the border in January – a 100% increase from the year prior when just 6,429 attempts were made.
