No joke. Even a couple of Republicans. For a little background, this bill was drafted to protect infants who are STILL ALIVE OUTSIDE THE WOMB after an attempted abortion. Thanks to Fox News, we actually got to here about this story. Bill O'Reilly has talked about it extensively on his show "The O'Reilly Factor". He had a woman appear on the show who has witnessed this happen many times at the hospital where she works. Apparently, labor is induced, and the baby comes out, ALIVE. Someone just holds the baby until it dies. They do nothing to save it -- in effect, the baby starves to death. This woman testified before Congress. Yet, 15 members STILL voted against this bill. It's sad that something like this doesn't even get media coverage. Wouldn't this tend to suggest a liberal bias in the media?

    House passes controversial abortion bill

    Wednesday, September 27, 2000

WASHINGTON (Reuters Health) - The House Tuesday night passed a controversial abortion bill sponsors said was needed to clarify recent court rulings and opponents said was a trap to use against them in the elections. The vote was 380-15.

The "Born Alive Infant Protection Act" would stipulate that "every infant member of the species homo sapiens and who is born alive at any stage of development" is a "person" and thus entitled to the same federal protections as any other person.

Sponsors of the bill said the Supreme Court ruling striking down Nebraska's "partial birth" abortion ban and a lower court ruling striking down New Jersey's law made it unclear if an infant fully outside its mother could be killed. "Newborns are now at risk," said Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J.

But opponents said it was nothing more than an election year trap. "This bill does not change the law in any way," said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y. "The purpose of this bill is only to get the pro-choice members to vote against it--then to slander us by saying we are for infanticide."

Sponsors had planned to add to the bill a "managers' amendment" harshly criticizing the recent court rulings. "The right to abortion, under this logic, means nothing less than the right to a dead baby, no matter where the killing takes place," said the amendment.

But the amendment was pulled just hours before the vote, at the insistence of moderate Republicans, who wanted to vote for the bill, but not for the language criticizing the court rulings.

"I didn't want to color one subject with the other," said Rep. Nancy Johnson, R-Conn. Johnson voted against the underlying bill because it would, she said, interfere in medical decision-making and "deny parents the ability to make decisions about their premature infants."

Courtesy of Bill O'Reilly, here are the members of Congress who say it's okay to kill infants:

    Julia Carson D-Indiana
    John Dingell D-Michigan
    Chaka Fattah D-Pennsylvania
    Ben Gillman R-New York
    Charlie Gonzalez D-Texas
    Alcee Hastings D-Florida
    Jesse Jackson, Jr D-Illinois
    Nancy Johnson R-Connecticut
    Barb Lee D-California
    Nita Lowey D-New York
    Carolyn Maloney D-New York
    Cynthia McKinney D-Georgia
    Nydia Velazquez D-New York
    Maxine Waters D-California
    Mel Watts D North Carolina

this topic was in George Will's back page colum in last week's Newsweek (cover story: Teachers), which many conservatives consider a member of the liberal media.

Obviously the vast majority of congresspeople, liberal and conservative voted for this bill, so I'm at a loss as to how a very, very small percentage of voters could turn this into a left vs. right issue.

So how come you're blaming it on the liberal media that it doesn't get more press? Are you really implying that if it had been 10 Republicans to 2 Democrats that the press would have been all over this like an anti-abortion axe-weilding nut all over private property?

I think you can make an argument that it suggests a liberal media because this sort of procedure puts a bad taste in everyone's mouth about the process of abortion. It forces us to see the consequences of what happens to a living creature when its mother chooses to abort it out of existence...but the procedure doesn't work. It's sort of the "dark side" of the choice...very clear to see why supporters of abortion rights would rather you didn't read this story.
