I agree with what some of the posters are saying on that article. I want to see the religious leaders coming out against this. It's a disgrace to be called human.

I want to see a huge number of scholars coming out and confirming that honor killings are pre-Islamic, and if not then I'd like to see some Muslims leaving Islam since scholars can't confirm that.

There is also a third case, where you're a Muslim who doesn't define Islam based on the "scholars" view, which is a good compromise I think.

 

I would prefer if they left out the words 'pre-Islamic' because I don't want people like ATW saying things like "well, the Islamics definitely incorporated that habit into their Islamic beliefs." Just coming out and denouncing such acts and explicitly stating that it is against the teachings of Islam should suffice. (Though I'm sure people will still find a way to twist that and make it seem like these things are done as a result of Islamic teachings)

Scholars can confirm it, and anyone who has knowledge of the history of Islam can confirm it. Too bad Muslims are unwilling to learn about our history. Being uneducated about Islam is where the problem lies (Muslims and non Muslims).

 

It doesn't matter what ATW says. If the scholars deem it to be non-Islamic and pre-Islamic, then these people are literally acting on their own and anyone who refers to it as an Islamic act basically starts to look crazy.

If it's not unanimously agreed, then you have your strategy for how to improve things. Find the ones who didn't agree, publicly shame them and remove their credentials. Since this world of scholars doesn't have anyone policing them, then I hold all the scholars responsible for not weeding out the bad scholars. Muslims are not going to be the ones policing them, that's not their responsibility, and extremely impractical too.

The scholars who support these things are like corrupt cops - other cops (or a higher authority) should arrest them. In the absence of a higher authority on earth, they either hold each other responsible, or they visibly lose credibility and you are responsible for continuing to participate in the corruption. Instead, the only time scholars attack each other is when someone dares to bring about improvement opportunities in the Hadith. What a joke.

Anyways, this is a frustrating topic for me. I hate scholars. I think they are responsible for almost everything wrong in the Islamic belief system. They are IMO a product of a God complex which grew larger and larger following Muhammad PBUH's death. There were no people in the early days of Islam who's occupation was: scholar. It was a hobby, an interest, and they generated their money independently by being engineers, scientists, poets, etc. They did not receive any money for being scholars. What value does a scholar add to the world today? Compeltely out of touch with our way of life. Telling me that if I don't put a lid on a cup of water the devil will piss in it? That's what value he brings me? That he doesn't understand the basic premise that dust, germs, etc will get into a glass of water without a lid? That if I beg Muhammad PBUH for forgiveness on judgement day, my sins will be passed on to Jews and Christians? That they dare to call themselves scholars, and they dare to call Bukhari's work SCIENCE of Hadith?

Sorry. This post wasn't necessarily directed at you, as you can see I just dislike scholars very much, and I'm sure you have your own personal way of avoiding or dealing with these problems.

You should seriously consider that a BAD thing.

 

The only BAD thing is that they either intentionally or unintentionally usually get it wrong when they are trying to put words in my mouth.

 

My goodness crazy people... someone should take responsibility to educate these folks and many more like them that this is 2011 and not prehistoric times when this was more common.

Culture people Culture... Obviously if this family was born and raised here the outcome would be totally different. This woman actually believes they did the right thing.. Is she wrong for thinking that? We know as Americans that is wrong but in a society where she lives this can be the total norm.. Who knows...
