The New York woman who died after she jumped eight storeys with her 10-month-old son strapped to her body jumped because she felt she had failed to protect him from minor falls she believed would lead to a lifelong illness, according to a note she left behind.

Cynthia Wachenheim left a note on 13 pages of lined notebook paper, the New York Times reports. In it, she said that she knew what she was about to do was "evil" but explained that her son Keston had had a few tumbles that led to problems that would plague him for the rest of his life, a law enforcement official who has seen the note told the Times.

She wrote that her friends, family and pediatrician didn't believe her, but that she noticed changes in the baby.

Keston Bacharach survived the fall with only a bruised cheek.

 There is a _ _ _!!!! Censored to keep this from going to D&D.

    Isn't 13 an unlucky number?

Also, very good reporting to tell us it was lined notebook paper.

The woman died, not the baby.

What the mom, needed then, were drugs, sweet drugs; they're the only the thing, that-would-have-kept-her-from-jum, -ping-off-a-bui-il-ding..

so we confirmed the baby and the 13 pages on lined notebook paper survived...right?

couldn't have done this without all of your support.

I think we still have some work to do on our next disaster summaries.

    Oh ok, so much better.

Amazing how the baby survived tbh. Feel good story even though mother's fate is pretty sad.

It would appear the baby is tougher than she ever imagined.

I should have bolded the part which says that the BABY survived a fall from 8 storeys. The mother i guess provided a cushion but the impact itself should have killed the baby since their organs are still very sensative at that age. Crazy stuff.

i have the feeling the symptoms she saw in her child were just imagined by the mother. guilt is very powerful at messing with your mind. also the end result points to mental health issues with the mother. perhaps a severe form of postpartum depression

it's tragic. if she didn't give the kid brain damage before he's surely going to have some now. also, growing up knowing your mother tried to kill you while killing herself has to be a terrible thing to live with.
